Alaska Nomad

Monday, February 5, 2007. OK, no posts for the weekend. I have strong excuses, however. Friday night, I went with a friend to the Andrew Wyeth exhibit at the Cincinnati Art Museum. Wyeth's granddaughter gave a very interesting lecture, lots of personal details about the artist and the background of his work. Preparations are getting somewhat frantic for my Feb. 13 departure for the Dominican Republic, still some packing, sorting things into storage, etc, but the adventure awaits! Links to this post.

Alaska Nomad: Alaska Nostalgia

http://alaskanomad.blogspot.com/2007/02/alaska-nostalgia.html

Friday, February 2, 2007. This morning, Cincinnati has gotten a massive snowfall, perhaps as much as half an inch. The snow seems to brighten the day considerably, even given the standard grey sky of an Ohio winter, at least until it melts and turns to slush. Thus, it was neat to find an excellent story in the Anchorage Daily News online about dog mushing:. Http:/ www.adn.com/life/lende/story/8606425p-8499083c.html. Author Heather Lende has written an excellent article-. There are walls of plowed snow in...

Alaska Nomad: What???

http://alaskanomad.blogspot.com/2007/01/what.html

Wednesday, January 31, 2007. The "well spoken" Sen. Joe Biden discusses his rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination in a long interview with a reporter from the NY Observer. At http:/ www.observer.com/printpage.asp? Are they going to turn to Hillary Clinton? 8221; Biden asked, lowering his voice to a hush to explain why Mrs. Clinton won’t win the election. Where do you want to be? Do you want to be in a place where 100 percent of the Democrats know you? But—and the “but” was c...Vanderbilt and ...

Alaska Nomad: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot???

http://alaskanomad.blogspot.com/2007/02/whiskey-tango-foxtrot.html

Thursday, February 1, 2007. I try to pursue a live and let live philosophy, in most respects. So the idea of typical middle-aged guys bowling in the nude has to be OK, at least in general principles. But still, one has to wonder.what in the Wide World of Sports are these guys thinking? And in Maine, in the winter. I suppose that it was way too cold for the traditional nude softball tournament. Alaska Nomad: Vanderbilt and John Edwards

http://alaskanomad.blogspot.com/2007/01/vanderbilt-and-john-edwards.html

Tuesday, January 30, 2007. Vanderbilt and John Edwards. I found a great post by Dean Barnett at http:/ hughhewitt.townhall.com/. Barnett has some wry comments on John Edwards' new 28,000 square foot house in North Carolina, noting that this falls short of the 60,000 square feet of the Vanderbilt estate "The Breakers" at Asheville. What about the house’s details? 5) What kind of things do you think will happen in “John’s Room? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Links Worth a Look. Bat Masterson and Benja...

Sun-dial in the Shade: December 2006

http://sdits.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html

Sun-dial in the Shade. Friday, December 29, 2006. I've been thinking of dropping a few pounds this winter. Call it my "resolution". Remember how fun and cool weight-loss products were in the 70's? Posted by Andy Freede. Thursday, December 28, 2006. Farewell, Yet Not Farewell. It has been almost a week since Mr Pandora died, and I went to the pet crematorium to pick up his ashes. I thought I handled it pretty well. I've been able to talk about it for a few days and keep it together. Posted by Andy Freede.

Sun-dial in the Shade: October 2008

http://sdits.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Sun-dial in the Shade. Thursday, October 2, 2008. I'd feel bad for not blogging in the last 18 months if I actually had anybody who read this blog. As I do not, and this is almost entirely for my own enjoyment, I feel no shame. The last year and a half has been one of changes, almost all drastic. With great power comes great responsibility. Learning the ropes of the new job was absorbing all of my time during the day, and so no time for blogging! This was the day that everything changed. Through it all w...

Sun-dial in the Shade: February 2007

http://sdits.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html

Sun-dial in the Shade. Friday, February 23, 2007. I liked today's fortune very much. When the waiter brought the check to the table, there was no "pile" of cookies in the middle of the table from which we must select our fortune, he instead laid a specific cookie in front of each of us. Here is the fortune laid in front of me:. There are dreamers and there are achievers. The difference between the two is action! Posted by Andy Freede. Thursday, February 22, 2007. Sound like a lot of detail to absorb?

Sun-dial in the Shade: Hyperion

http://sdits.blogspot.com/2007/02/hyperion.html

Sun-dial in the Shade. Thursday, February 22, 2007. Hyperion, by Dan Simmons is far from a quick read. It is intense and absorbing, yet deals with a culture both exceedingly human and alien at the same time. The Earth has been gone for centuries, destroyed in an apparent scientific accident, and humanity has spread across the galaxy to hundreds of different habitable planets. Sound like a lot of detail to absorb? That is just the Prologue. Finds his muse by helping to found a colony of artists on Hyperio...

Sun-dial in the Shade: January 2007

http://sdits.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html

Sun-dial in the Shade. Monday, January 29, 2007. KI's Next Big Thing. Sorry no posts for a week, it was one of those times where I barely had time to think, let alone blog. My office building sits right across the highway from Paramount's Kings Island, which allows me to sit and watch the coasters roll non-stop between April and November. During the off-season, they prepare for the park's new ride, and scramble to get it assembled as close to opening day as possible. Lake, just up I-71 about 200 ish.

Sun-dial in the Shade. Tuesday, January 23, 2007. Continuing the dark trend in recent cookies. One must dare to be himself, however frightening or strange that self may prove to be. What an odd idea that in the course of discovering your true self, you can actually frighten yourself with what you find. Posted by Andy Freede. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Sun-dial in the Shade: UBIK

http://sdits.blogspot.com/2006/12/ubik.html

Sun-dial in the Shade. Wednesday, December 13, 2006. The monthly Sci-Fi book group meeting was last night, and the book of the month was UBIK, by Phillip K Dick. This is the second Dick book that we’ve read this year, and I think that I may be his only fan in the group. An interesting side-note for me was the introduction of a minor character named “Nina Freede”. As that last name is specific to my relations, I can only assume that unless Phillip K Dick invented that name randomly, he mus...
