Alastair Dargue: April 2013

http://alastairdargue.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Monday, 8 April 2013. For the first time ever the conditions were just right for trying this. Firstly, the maple tree I planted 25 years ago in the garden is over 12" diameter, there was frost in the ground, daytime above freezing and before bud burst. So, a quick check on tinternet and out with the drill and a piece of pipe - blimey, it's working - quick get a jug! Within an hour it was clear I would need to big up the collection device so brewing kit to the rescue. Thursday, 4 April 2013. Simple templa...

Greenwood Woman: 06/15/12

http://greenwoodwoman.blogspot.com/2012_06_15_archive.html

Friday, 15 June 2012. Riven Oak Demi Vase - a prototype. I've been developing my riven oak vase idea, which first started at the Contemporary Coppice workshops with Charlie Whinney in February 2012. Since that workshop, Charlie asked me to make 20 jam jar riven oak vases for his wedding, and this was great practice at riving and developing the general idea. I did an Oak Swill Basket making course with Owen Jones. There is an enormous amount of manipulating of the riven oak strips, hard on the hands, wris...

Eric Goodson Woodcarving Notes: Bowls

http://ericgoodson.blogspot.com/p/gallery.html

A novice's notebook on greenwood carving and treenware. What distinguishes a bowl from a cup? Is it about proportions, with bowls wider than they are high? Or is it about usage, where one sips from cups but spoons from bowls? Yet in the sixteenth century most people drank from what we could consider bowls. Regardless, here are both cups (kuksas) and bowls, listed from most recent to oldest. Spalted Birch "Dave Fisher" bowl (Nov 2014). Blue under red milk paint, flax and beeswax finish. Here is the ill-fa...

Eric Goodson Woodcarving Notes: Notes on eating spoon design

http://ericgoodson.blogspot.com/2015/02/hand-and-eye-proportions.html

A novice's notebook on greenwood carving and treenware. Sunday, February 8, 2015. Notes on eating spoon design. I have been studying eating spoon design these days, trying to figure out what feels right to me. Here are some of my notes:. How much should the bowl rise in relation to the handle? About 15 degrees, so it comes up to meet the mouth. How long should the bowl be in relation to its width? About 1.6 to 1. How long should the spoon be in relation to the length of the bowl? How about handle shape?

Greenwood Woman: New Greenwood Scheme - the beginnings of a new movement?

http://greenwoodwoman.blogspot.com/2012/02/new-green-woodwork.html

Wednesday, 29 February 2012. New Greenwood Scheme - the beginnings of a new movement? View around Witherslack, Cumbria. After a day coppicing for various sizes of materials including hazel and ash we were each given a brief . My brief for example was called "Picture This". Can you make picture frames using reclaimed bits of glass? There were lots of lighting ideas, some more complicated than others. I spent a frantic session on the pole lathe turning a stake for a garden light our team had devised&#4...

Greenwood Woman: An indoor silver birch bench

http://greenwoodwoman.blogspot.com/2012/06/indoor-silver-birch-bench.html

Friday, 15 June 2012. An indoor silver birch bench. Here is a new bench I've just finished with a silver birch seat and ash legs. Very simple construction, but lots of interesting curves and waves in the legs and seat. A nice burr in the seat edge too. And let me just gently remind you that commissions are also available! 22 June 2013 at 21:30. Hey thats a great bench ,I love the legs ,nice work and an interesting blog .Hi from Scotland :). 29 May 2014 at 19:48. 29 May 2014 at 21:23. MY PLEIN AIR BLOG.

http://ericgoodson.blogspot.com/2014/11/why-it-took-me-years-i-will-never-know.html

A novice's notebook on greenwood carving and treenware. Wednesday, November 5, 2014. Why it took me years, I will never know. Finally finished a carved bowl, a la Dave Fisher, several years after instruction from him. It took me that long to build one of Dave's bowl horse. S and a carving bench to really secure the work. Here is the bench:. Once the log was cleaned up and the form laid out with dividers and string, I set about excavating. Thanks for everything, Dave! November 6, 2014 at 4:43 AM. View my ...

Eric Goodson Woodcarving Notes: Toasting spoons

http://ericgoodson.blogspot.com/2014/12/toasting-spoons.html

A novice's notebook on greenwood carving and treenware. Wednesday, December 3, 2014. I hope Don Nalezyty does not mind, but here is his post on "toasting" spoons to achieve a darker appearance and maybe a harder surface:. The toasting process is quite simple. The basic idea is to kiln dry the spoon after it's completed, but not oiled and bring the temparature up just high enough to start to darken the wood a little bit. In the morning, the oil is dry to the touch and the spoons are generally a darker ric...

Eric Goodson Woodcarving Notes: Copycats and craft

http://ericgoodson.blogspot.com/2014/02/copycats-and-craft.html

A novice's notebook on greenwood carving and treenware. Thursday, February 20, 2014. I came across a provocative article. On the American Craft Council's website recently by Harriete Estel Berman. Here are a few choice bits:. I respect her frustration. Must be hard to see your novel idea mass produced by foreign industrialists for their profit. But I don't agree with her. Facebook group. The whole "makers" movement in general is beholden to the connectivity of the internet, the sharing of ideas and h...

Eric Goodson Woodcarving Notes: Spoons I admire

http://ericgoodson.blogspot.com/p/work-i-admire.html

A novice's notebook on greenwood carving and treenware. When I began this blog, I intended it as a sort of digital scrapbook for myself. This page is where that effort started. I was not always as precise with attribution as I could have been in those early days. If you see something here that you made, drop me a line and I will give you credit. Eric Goodson Woodcarving Notes: Spoons

http://ericgoodson.blogspot.com/p/spoons.html

A novice's notebook on greenwood carving and treenware. Many spoons have headed off to good homes, so it is hard to put them in order now. I do know that the first ones were given to my Mom and Alyssa for Christmas, 2012. Maybe I will take pictures of those some day. So, here are some of my spoons to date, listed most recent to oldest. Apple, (I think? Tooled finish with daisy inscribed, soaked in warm walnut oil and beeswax for about five hours. Daisy Mae's Eating Spoon. It is like a little serving spoo...

Living with Clans and Castles

Living with Clans and Castles. An occasional blog by Alastair Cunningham. Tuesday, September 23, 2014. Scotland says 'No'. But now that you're listening. So what should those outside these shores make of our Independence Referendum? In short, the 'No' vote won but we are now in a much better position - with more devolution on the way - than we were a month ago. The good news is that Scotland has put down a marker. We want more devolution and we want it soon. Almost all the mainstream media (including Sco...
