What you need to know. Sign up for alerts. During an emergency, remain calm, use common sense and give assistance as needed. Here are specific steps you can take to stay safe during an emergency:. Call the VCU Police at (804) 828-1234. Or the Richmond Police by dialing 911. Evacuate buildings immediately upon fire alarm activation or upon request of authorities. These small yellow devices are strategically installed in classrooms, residence halls and other high-traffic areas throughout campus. They are designed to provide an auditory and visual alert when a threat has occurred or is imminent. Much like text messages, a protective action statement will scroll on the screen during a threatening event.
