Reflective Practice

Wednesday, 31 July 2013. Making Day: 30th July. Great opportunity for a making day with Claire yesterday - we agreed that we should initiate more sessions like this (probably Saturdays) over the next year where anyone can drop in as the real time feedback is so valuable. We spoke for 45 mins at the start, followed by an hour between 2 and 3, and later followed by an email exchange possibly to follow up at a later date. Attention to hands - articulated cylinders, easier to work observationally. Clothing i...

Reflective Practice: Lucy Day

http://alexacoxreflect.blogspot.com/2013/07/lucy-day.html

Wednesday, 31 July 2013. She liked the tumbling house falling, and the darker palette which created a sense of foreboding, unease and menace. She said I should think about the compositions first - not sure what this means from my notes as I always start with composition. We spoke about open studios and how it is important to target my audience and push my networks. My statements are good and match with the work! She gave me a number of artists to look at (below). Notes from Lucy from our talk:. Http:/ ww...

Reflective Practice: May 2013

http://alexacoxreflect.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, 19 May 2013. Building up layers of colour to add pattern and contours to shorts plus further light and dark to vests. Detail showing slight softening of colours and how surface is beginning to be built up in washes/glazes. Added soft purple into hair to create brown and variation from light cast by overhanging trees. Used payne's grey and burnt umber to add dark definition to foreground figure - think this really works well to create depth. It won't be so black/white in later stages. Amel...Detai...

Reflective Practice: Studio: 25th May & 1st June

http://alexacoxreflect.blogspot.com/2013/06/studio-25th-may-1st-june.html

Sunday, 2 June 2013. Studio: 25th May and 1st June. I have included photos from 2 studio days to show progression - 1st June was a really productive studio day! Building up layers in water and beginning to add leaves and 'blossom' to background trees - they need to be quite dense but allow some blue sky to come through to create depth. Glazed some further red and sienna into the foreground and skirt to bring figure forwards. Added blue wash to background figure (still no face). Need to start addi...I jus...

Reflective Practice: Studio: 22nd June

http://alexacoxreflect.blogspot.com/2013/07/studio-22nd-june.html

Tuesday, 2 July 2013. Back in the studio for a hardcore weekend of painting - I'm very aware of the time ticking away from the deadline but I can't rush the painting process so I am expanding my surfaces to allow for drying and thinking time. I have decided to work slightly more aggressively on my paintings to change the mood to something more sinister, and to incorporate different marks including using a palette knife. Studio revamped for Summer:). Inspired by Leda and the Swan - like the way swan is pr...

Reflective Practice: Studio: 10th April

http://alexacoxreflect.blogspot.com/2013/04/studio-10th-april.html

Wednesday, 10 April 2013. I have been working into the three colour study paintings with glazing; this is a slow process so these pieces eventually will run alongside a body of other work. I have also been generating more drawings to explore composition and context and relevant reading. These sketches are bring together figures which are intended to link - some repeat a figure in a different position, some show progression of movement. Another more static composition using the diagonal - this reminds me ...

I'd rather be painting. Wednesday, July 16, 2014. Statement July 2013 - I have included this as I found it difficult to articulate the changes in my work and feel that it is useful to make a comparison. Statement July 2014 - first attempt. Make references that are relevent and useful for the viewer. Don't tell the viewer want to think or how to experience the work. Don't be precious about favourite phrases. Shorter is better in this case. I reference familiar imagery to construct ambiguous encounters; co...

I'd rather be painting. Sunday, January 29, 2012. I have been revisiting Angela Carter's short stories after a few years (in fact the copy I am currently looking at is inscribed inside the front cover as a Christmas gift, 2002! Flesh and the Mirror. Continuous carnival, no matter what ripples of agitation disturb the never-ceasing, endlessly circulating, quiet, gentle, melencholy crowds who throng the wet web of alleys under a false ceiling of umbrellas.'. Professional Context

Wednesday, 30 November 2011. Breaking Boundaries Audience Response. I was really nervous about conducting the interviews but found that this was a more personal way of recording a response and allowed me to develop the questions. Both hosts of the painting responded more favourably at the end of the day than they did at the beginning and again they found personal aspects which they could relat e to in the image. Exploratory Project

Sunday, 29 April 2012. The looser drawings - moving, more gestural, living. Development of collage and photographs into painting. Incorporation of animals to add another dimension but not in their current form. Rapid generation and selection. Elements to leave behind (for now):. Paint on unprimed canvas - although some of the twinned compositions work. Early paintings which seem overly static. Superimposing with line drawings (figure) - however there is potential with pattern. Ideas about adolescence and...

Studio Practice

Sunday, 25 November 2012. Record of feedback from paired. The first paired crit came almost before we had begun our work for the Studio Practice unit. What was really useful was E. and I were able to discuss our reflections from the previous unit and begin to collaboratively formulate strategies to tackle the next unit. The key issues I felt had been raised from the exploratory project were as follows. We also discussed how to manage blog entries and I decided that I would generate 10 posts which would r...
