For a socialist Scottish Parliament. The scottish question – a federal answer →. 21 April 1997 · 4:26 am. Should we stand the convergence criteria on their head? People in the labour movement are justifiably concerned by the massive cuts facing our local communities. They are worried too, that New Labour will not commit itself to raise taxes to pay for social services. I am not against raising taxes, but to secure lasting improvements we also need to consider more imaginative, forward-looking pro...What ...

Old Ideas – New Agenda. Should we stand the convergence criteria on their head? 5 March 1997 · 4:19 am. For a socialist Scottish Parliament. What is the Left's alternative? The Full Employment Forum argues for a Keynesian strategy and Will Hutton for a stakeholding variant. Interestingly even Hutton's position is seen as wild by New Labour. But neither challenges capitalism. Which leads to the role of the Campaign for Socialism. What is our goal? Traditionally the Labour Left has encompassed those for wh...

Newer posts →. 14 July 1996 · 3:47 am. Fast Track to Disaster. Clause IV part (4) was the historic compromise between capital and labour. The City feared it, so it was removed. The Scottish Parliament’s ability to raise income tax by up to 3% – and the possibility that the principle could be extended to cover indirect taxation – worries the City and may suffer the same fate. And it is a dangerous precedent. Why should only one part of the UK have such a right? Simply to raise taxes in today’s econo...

Old Ideas – New Agenda →. 16 October 1996 · 4:11 am. Poverty is eating up the planet at an alarming rate. However. Concerned we claim to be, it seems clear that hoping the problem. Will just go away is unlikely to work. The only way we will. Destroy the plague of poverty is to adopt a more radical approach. To running the world’s economy. The collapse of the Berlin Wall and the demise of the Soviet. Union have heralded huge changes, and shifted responsibility for. Nature of the problems we face. In the W...

A Charter for 21st Century Socialism. Every year has its fair share of anniversaries, but 2014 has some very significant ones and in years to come it will have another one -the referendum on Scottish independence. Sadly 2014 will now be remembered for the sad and early death of Bob Crow whose impact on the RMT and the wider trade union and Labour Movement was huge. He was not someone the movement could afford to lose. We will look back and judge in 10, 20, 30 years time. We must hope that the Scottish La...

A Charter for 21st Century Socialism. Working class unity against the establishment. It is the British establishment and the establishment alone that is to blame for the number of working people supporting independence in the referendum in Scotland. You would think that Labour’s leaders might have learned from their grievous mistakes. Rather than joining forces with a Tory Party that the independence owes everything to, Labour should have treated the Conservatives as political Ebola. Back to the Future.
