Over 100 hundred years ago, Sudbury became the first community in Ontario to own and operate its own electricity generating facility. The peak demand for electricity has evolved from the original 75 thousand watts (75 Kilowatts) to a high of 200 million watts (200 Megawatts) and now is about 150 million watts (150 Megawatts), but the motivation remains to keep Greater Sudbury Hydro customers at the leading-edge of innovation. Which explains the Smart Grid. The shareholder is the City of Greater Sudbury.

Power outages-planned and unplanned. Periodically, scheduled interruptions are required to safely perform required maintenance on our system. These infrequent interruptions are intended to be of short duration, and the work we do is designed to minimize unplanned outages. Science North and Greater Sudbury Hydro are proud to announce an Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station is now available at Science North to provide complimentary charging to science centre visitors. The Eaton Level 2 Charger will charge two vehicles simultaneously, and is now available for use. Look for the green signs in the science centre parking lot, and be sure to register your vehicle with the front desk staff after you plug in.
