geography lessons by trial and error: sifa kwa mungu

http://www.ambermoren.blogspot.com/2009/06/sifa-kwa-mungu.html

Geography lessons by trial and error. The world in shades of amber. As I stare my final week in Kenya in the face, I'm finally doing a lot of things that I always meant to do and never got around to. This weekend one of those things was going to church. Which prompted a list of pieces of "common" knowledge that I must remind myself I did not know before February of 2009. One goat is worth 4-5 chickens (depending on the size). Swahili is a mix of Arabic and Bantu languages. One goro-goro is about 2 kgs.

geography lessons by trial and error: sangalo rocks!

http://www.ambermoren.blogspot.com/2009/06/sangalo-rocks.html

Geography lessons by trial and error. The world in shades of amber. Sangalo Rocks" is a massive boulder pile at the top of a hill, visible from the road leading from Bungoma to Kakamega. Sangalo is also one of the sites in Bungoma where we grow passion fruit, so it's somewhat appropriate that I saved this excursion for my last week as well. 4 photos * (1,000 words/photo) = 4,000 words. Enjoy. A Kenyan man stands on top of one of the rocks - gives perspective on their size! July 5, 2009 at 6:44 AM. 0202 P...

http://www.ambermoren.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Geography lessons by trial and error. The world in shades of amber. First, last Thursday, lesson learned:. Never wait until the last day on your visa to renew it at a border crossing between two semi-corrupt countries. Or if you do, bring about twice what it should cost, and expect to pay "a little extra" to everyone you interact with. Saturday was ridiculous, and completely un-Bungoma-like. In a one sentence summary: Paul, Lukas, and I (later joined by Joana, the Red Cross employee stationed in Bung...

Katy Goes To Kenya: May 2009

http://katygoestokenya.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Katy Goes To Kenya. Five months in Western Kenya with the Foundation for Sustainable Development. Thursday, May 28, 2009. Hope everyone is doing well. I'm tired from staying up late last night to watch the Manchester United vs. Game with the ex-pat (motley) crew last night. David, my co-worker, told me to root for. And they won two-nill. Coincidence? My host dad is a Man U fan though, as well as a lot of other Kakamegans, so he was disappointed with a capital D this morning. Hah! Is conducted in English).

Katy Goes To Kenya. Five months in Western Kenya with the Foundation for Sustainable Development. Monday, April 6, 2009. Life and Death in Kakamega. A friend tried to save him, but realized that he was getting pulled under too, and swam back. Some brave villagers by the river also tried to help, to no avail. Unfortunately, one was drunk, and ended up drowning too. If you want to hear more about African funerals, my friend Emily wrote a pretty fascinating account of one when she was in Zambia. Scroll ...

Katy Goes To Kenya. Five months in Western Kenya with the Foundation for Sustainable Development. Monday, January 26, 2009. Hello from the kakamega cyber cafe! I started a post yesterday but about 20 min into it, it started raining and the power at the internet cafe went out (this is normal). i'll be careful this time and save as i go, though i think it's stopped raining for the time being. So much has happened already i could spend hours writing about it, but i'll pick a few things. Speaking of english,...

Katy Goes To Kenya. Five months in Western Kenya with the Foundation for Sustainable Development. Friday, June 26, 2009. Guest Houses and Street Food. I’m enjoying being a dirty backpacker again. Even in these, there are usually shared bathrooms. Tuesday, June 23, 2009. Well, I wrote a lovely long post in Jinja. On the Nile, but the computer at the hostel ate it without any remorse what-so-ever. if I have time I'll try to rewrite it. And getting launched a good foot in the air out of my seat at 20-second...

http://katygoestokenya.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Katy Goes To Kenya. Five months in Western Kenya with the Foundation for Sustainable Development. Wednesday, February 25, 2009. I had liver last night for the first time I as long as I can remember. But what am I here for, if not to try new things? I didn’t like the smell at first, but got used to it and finished all but one of the little chopped pieces I took. That’s right, chopped liver. The starch options are: white rice, fries, ugali (a stiff porridge made from corn flour) or chipati (like naan).

Katy Goes To Kenya. Five months in Western Kenya with the Foundation for Sustainable Development. Tuesday, October 27, 2009. I'm doing well, taking classes at UCLA Extension and looking for a job. I think about Kenya almost daily, but haven't taken the time to write. Even though I should be packing right now (I'm going home for a week tomorrow to help with Katrina and Kier's wedding), I'm compelled to write. The first that came to mind were:. How do families qualify for a cow, goat, etc? Do participants ...
