Alailelai Maasai Sustainability Organization. Women’s Microfinance Loan Program. Our traditional pastoral way of life is currently threatened by the recent effects of climate change as well as by the strict conservation practices implemented within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The government provides some food assistance; however, it’s not nearly enough to support the community. Prior to this the local Maasai relied on subsistence farming to supply food for their families.

All of our activities are aimed at providing necessary support to our community members living in the rural villages of Alailelai Ward in the Ngorongoro Concervation Area (NCA) in northern Tanzania. We are a traditionally pastoral people who have been affected by loss of land, government regulations and conservation restrictions, lack of health care services, water and basic food needs.

WMI representative (left) and Loan program local coordinator (right). Loan amounts of $100-$125. Term of 6 months. Interest rate of 10% per 6 month period. Accumulated interest is used to further fund the program. Successful borrowers are eligible for follow up loans. Loan groups of 10-20 borrowers. Training, technical assistance, follow-up support.

Secondary education in Tanzania has only recently become available tuition-free. However, associated costs still make schooling impossible for many youth.
