A sciencey blog for the curious ape. January 5, 2013 in fun. It’s been almost a year since I last posted. Oh, how time has escaped me. I’ll be updating this blog more often now. Could I make it up to you if I showed beautiful photos of Oahu and Kauai? Well then… we’ve struck a deal. Perhaps the most intriguing and resplendent tree specimen in Oahu. A coastline cemented in my memory. Hanalei Bay, settling into the afternoon. Waimea Canyon in Kauai, drenched in dryness and mist. The Na Pali coast. ThatR...

A sciencey blog for the curious ape. An Appreciation of Place — from the Midwest to the South. January 8, 2012 in environment. Madison has some rather lovely trees. After the move from Madison back to my home state (Georgia), I realized how much I already missed Wisconsin. Its trees, lakes, green space, prairies, wetlands and wildlife have left a permanent mark on me. It’s strange how a place can create such an appreciation of life. A day of strawberry picking. In its fall peacefulness. Cave of the mounds.

Mushroom drought | Madison Forager
https://madisonforager.wordpress.com/2012/10/04/mushroom-drought
Fish Caught Fungi Sampled Dumplings Prodded. Blackberry and sour-cherry pie. A prickly Lady Luck puts out. October 4, 2012. This drought. It is not just the corn. It is not just the trees. I have no pictures from my recent reconnaissance at Picnic Point. If I did, you might weep. What I saw on this trip was a single bloom of maitake, as brittle as crackers; a couple sparse bunches of honeys, already too old. Hard to imagine that honeys are some of the biggest organisms. I have never seen a fall this dry.
