The Art Treehouse: February 2011
http://thearttreehouse.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, February 24, 2011. Cold days and GLUE! Creativity can be elusive during the last stretch of New England winter. Glue has become our favorite pass time. I have observed over the years I have worked with children and now with my own, that any collage activity is really all about the glue. So, why not make glue the main character? We have also brought out left over collage materials and nature walk treasures. She was eager to see if the rocks would stay on the paper once they dried. I love this on...

The Art Treehouse: April 2011
http://thearttreehouse.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
Friday, April 22, 2011. An Array of Drawing Materials. Lucia explored the qualities of each tool and talked about the difference in textures. Chalk pastels made thick lines and markers were good for details. I wonder if she was inspired by Harold and the Purple Crayon. Small hands and big hands enjoy exploring with drawing materials. Don't be afraid to stray from the childhood staples. Children learn quickly to take good care of art materials if they are given the opportunity to explore. Cut, Glue, Punch.

The Art Treehouse: Nature and creativity intertwined
http://thearttreehouse.blogspot.com/2011/08/nature-and-creativity-intertwined.html
Friday, August 19, 2011. Nature and creativity intertwined. This summer we've visited farms, ponds and the ocean as much as possible. In our daily trips, I have loved observing the little one and her friends invested in their free play. Story telling, inventing, negotiations and creating (spaces, structures, scenarios, characters.) often reach a peak while outdoors, while most quarrels are avoided or die out pretty quickly. Paths to get lost in. Codman Farm. Making forts at the Boston Nature Center.

The Art Treehouse: March 2011
http://thearttreehouse.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, March 31, 2011. The intersection of nature and art. This past weekend we took the little one to our first Woolapalooza. It was also our first visit to a farm this season and an amazing experience. We learned about the path wool follows, "from shearing to sweater." It was an interdisciplinary lesson in science, social studies and art. The city crowds surrounded this man and sheep, as he laboriously sheared lane by lane, with strength, skill and patience. Today, the little one took a trip to the ...

The Art Treehouse: May 2011
http://thearttreehouse.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
Wednesday, May 4, 2011. Cooking and cutting with knives! Cooking is an art and eating can be one too! My little one LOVES to cook. She gets to spend time with her Papa, who happens to be a great cook and use different ingredients, smell the wonderful scents of the kitchen and use a knife! As for me, I love to see her try all those new foods. A couple of weeks ago they made soup together. He was SO cautious as he taught her how to use the knife. Fabulous home made soup. Threw them in the blender. May at P...

The Art Treehouse: Cut, Glue, Punch
http://thearttreehouse.blogspot.com/2011/04/cut-glue-punch.html
Tuesday, April 12, 2011. Cut, Glue, Punch. A lady with her dog and a long yellow bus. This morning Lucia initiated her own activity. She found these foam sheets left over from one of my classes. That's when the hole-puncher came out. Her eyes opened wide! What a discovery. She now wanted to add little circles to everything. She added eyes and a nose to this little dog:. She also felt in control, allowing her creativity to flow while deliberately cutting shapes and gluing them exactly where she intended to.

The Art Treehouse: July 2011
http://thearttreehouse.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Thursday, July 28, 2011. 3D Art: Contact Paper and Construction Paper Strips. This was one of the most fun activities I have ever done with children. It was exhilarating to observe this group of three four year old girls as they navigated a new concept, inspiring each other with ideas and building upon what they had learned from observing their work. I laid out a large piece of contact paper on our art table with one inch strips of construction paper. I chose colors that reminded me of Joan Mir. The thre...

The Art Treehouse: January 2011
http://thearttreehouse.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, January 25, 2011. We continue our study of winter, the subtle changes of the elements and the wonderful transformations of water. Foreseeing that we were going to have some extreme temperatures, I thought it would be a good time to make some ice of our own. We gathered a few containers from the recycling bin and interesting shaped ones from our drawers. When I asked how we would get the water outside, Lucia thought of using her watering cans. (These have come in handy for bath time, too! We made...

The Art Treehouse: The Eric Carle Museum
http://thearttreehouse.blogspot.com/2012/03/eric-carle-museum.html
Friday, March 16, 2012. The Eric Carle Museum. A few weeks ago, we visited the Eric Carle Museum. With my little one's class. The building is spacious and modern, with Scandinavian design and wide spaces. The wonderful bursts of color left us inspired and ready to roll our sleeves up at home. We spent time in the art room, where the children were invited to think about art and make their own creations, and we visited the galleries with one dedicated to Eric Carle's work, and two other illustrators. So, i...

The Art Treehouse: Bubble Painting
http://thearttreehouse.blogspot.com/2011/07/bubble-painting.html
Friday, July 15, 2011. This week we tried out painting by blowing bubbles. I mixed some dish-washing liquid, water and a little glycerin into small bowls and added about a teaspoon of paint. I found these bubble solution recipes. That might come in handy for those who need more accurate proportions. I usually just play it by ear. I then hunted around the house for any wands or blowers I could find. We then headed outside with trays and sturdy white construction paper and just started blowing bubbles!
