An Englishman in New Orleans

An Englishman in New Orleans. Wednesday, February 3, 2010. Sorry about the long absence - I'm in the UK, where my mother is very ill. I've left behind a city even more exuberant than usual: not only has the Mardi Gras season kicked off, but the Saints are in the Superbowl this Sunday. And, thanks to my sister Jacqui and the stupidity of the National Football League, the Saints' catchphrase "Who dat" is making international headlines. Thursday, December 24, 2009. I'm certainly not in the same camp as Fox ...

An Englishman in New Orleans: October 2009

http://anenglishmaninneworleans.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

An Englishman in New Orleans. Wednesday, October 21, 2009. Our house is primarily mint green. I knew that, but I didn't know that it had drop-lap siding and a full complement of Eastlake details, such as turned columns, an elaborate frieze and decorative millwork of all varieties. She chose the 600 block of Spain Street, which is where we live. Saturday, October 17, 2009. Every so often Louisiana makes international headlines, and it's always for the wrong reasons. That's partly because even in 2009,...

An Englishman in New Orleans: June 2009

http://anenglishmaninneworleans.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

An Englishman in New Orleans. Thursday, June 25, 2009. Two summers ago, I wrote that New Orleans had experienced its highest-ever temperature of 102F (39C). Yesterday, that record was broken again, with the mercury hitting 104F (40C). At this rate, in 108 years' time the temperature will have reached 212F (100C), and I will no longer require a kettle to boil my cup of Nescafé in the morning. Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Monday, June 15, 2009. And the city's first World Naked Bike Ride. Friday, June 12, 2009.

An Englishman in New Orleans: November 2009

http://anenglishmaninneworleans.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

An Englishman in New Orleans. Wednesday, November 18, 2009. I had my first encounter with the US healthcare system yesterday. I went to a GP with a minor ailment, and was told that the charge for the initial visit would be $200. (British readers: forget the official exchange rate. In purchasing power terms, $200 is roughly the equivalent of £200.) After that, it would be $70 a visit. So why is it so much more expensive the first time? I asked politely, concealing my resentment. We're still being bombarde...

An Englishman in New Orleans: December 2009

http://anenglishmaninneworleans.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

An Englishman in New Orleans. Thursday, December 24, 2009. As I belatedly installed a pack of "holiday lites" on our Christmas tree last night, I realised just how comprehensively the C-word has been banished from the American vocabulary. Google "happy holidays", and you get 61.5 million hits. Now try "merry Christmas": a pitiful 40 million. It's no exaggeration to say that in the past couple of months, I've seen the word Christmas in print about four times. By the way, if you're looking for a last-minut...

An Englishman in New Orleans: If you live more than 500 miles from Jackson Square, you won't find this funny.

http://anenglishmaninneworleans.blogspot.com/2009/12/if-you-live-more-than-500-miles-from.html

An Englishman in New Orleans. Tuesday, December 1, 2009. If you live more than 500 miles from Jackson Square, you won't find this funny. You know you're from Louisiana if. You've never heard of a dry county. You've never heard of a county. You hear gambling is illegal in some other states and are surprised. You reinforce your attic to store Mardi Gras beads. Your sunglasses fog up when you step outside. When you give directions you use "lakeside and riverside" not north and south. You have to reset your ...

An Englishman in La Tranche

Saturday, 16 May 2015. The last few days. All good things come to an end, and soon it was time to pack for our return journey. But not before a call at Valley Parade to find a Bradford City vest for young Sacha. Jim and Les came to visit. Note the hat protecting Jim from the sun! We had a lovely evening chez Helen (sadly Mo was away) with apéritifs outside. This was the view from their house! Ok, it wasn't 25ºC but a good siesta in the sun can't be beaten. An Englishman In New York

An Englishman In New York. Friday, February 09, 2007. Tomorrow - Feb 10th - is our one year wedding anniversary. I can't believe how quickly the last year has gone - and how much has happened in it! Anyway, tonight we're off out for a celebratory dinner at One. In the meat packing district which is apparently a pretty cool restaurant, and tomorrow we've got tickets for The Lion King on Broadway. All assuming I get out of work alive today. Posted by Rich at 3:13 PM. Monday, February 05, 2007. The Lincoln ...

An Englishman in New York! Saturday, 13 December 2014. 12 Months in 3 Minutes. I didn't realize but it has been just over a year since I posted on here and I thought it was time for a proper update about what I've been up to. Location: Queens County, NY, USA. Wednesday, 11 September 2013. We're all going on a summer holiday. August has been one hell of a month! I will have to refresh myself on the rules for this one because I was pretty drunk but I liked this one and the one we played after Roxanne, yes ...
