Christmas in the Tropics | aneversettingsun

https://aneversettingsun.wordpress.com/2015/02/07/christmas-in-the-tropics

Christmas in the Tropics. February 7, 2015. Being in Indonesia during the holidays was probably the most difficult part of my service so far. Seeing pictures of family gatherings and hearing Christmas music made me feel pretty homesick. Thankfully, I had a lot of distractions. Between birthday time with my mom in Bali, Christmas in Bandung and a badass time with my buddies in Cambodia, I’d say this year’s festivities turned out extremely well. Did we say we wanted to go silver shopping? The next day we w...

March 26, 2014. Right now I am sitting in a warnet (internet cafe) in a town called Puntin, which is a 20 minute walk from my home in Gurungsari (which literally translates as Mt. Sari). My host family is incredibly kind, patient and welcoming. My ibu (host mother) spent about an hour teaching me how to hand wash my clothes (the work is just as back-breaking as I expected it to be), and my host father did my language homework with (for? A typical day for me is as follows:. I hope this post finds you well!

March 14, 2015. I’ve been in Indonesia for almost a whole year now! Life here has started to feel pretty normal, though my day-to-day has changed completely in a lot of ways. Well, I actually don’t take showers. I mandi, which essentially means taking a bucket of ice cold water from a large basin in my bathroom, giving myself a short pep talk and then dumping it on my head. By the time you get to the third or fourth bucket it’s really not so bad. My mandi – complete with bucket. Going to the Bathroom.

That Time I Hiked Gunung Cupu | aneversettingsun

That Time I Hiked Gunung Cupu. April 24, 2016. View of Gunung Cupu from the highway. I set out early this morning for Plered the town at the base of the mountain alone and expecting a nice meditative solo hike. The path was difficult to find, so I asked directions from a few women. They pointed to the path and asked if I was alone. I said I was, and the older woman insisted that her daughter join me. No, no, I said. I’ll go alone. It’s fine. Halfway up the mountain looking down on Plered. In case you&#82...

Gratitude in the Time of Idul Adha | aneversettingsun

Gratitude in the Time of Idul Adha. October 8, 2014. Just a heads up, there are some photos of goats post-slaughter. Nothing too grisly, but you’ve been warned.*. On Sunday, I experienced the Muslim holiday Idul Adha for the first time. According to tradition, all Muslims who are financially able should sacrifice a goat or a cow (or 5 cows or 10 goats) at least once in their lifetime, cut up the meat and distribute it to the less fortunate. Ibu’s cutting up the goat meat on a banana leaf. My extended fam...

A drop indo bucket. For the romantic minimalist, memories make the best souvenirs: A public journal of my journey through the Peace Corps in Indonesia. December 1, 2014. 8220;A grateful heart is a happy heart.”. I saw this written on a wall almost three years ago. And, it has always resonated with me. I journal three new things I have been grateful for each day. I was motivated by a TED talk that said that new things to be grateful for each day were one of the pillars of happiness. The Art of Letting Go.

An ever-present smile

Making Damn Sure

Monday, May 3, 2010. I know that in this economy I shouldn't be complaining about being poor. We have food in the fridge, formula in Emerys belly and a roof over our head. That being said, I really want new clothes! I'm hoping that I can maybe I can stash enough cash to splurge a little bit and get myself some shorts and tanks for the summer. One can only dream. Tuesday, March 30, 2010. Sunday, March 28, 2010. The power of "Thank you" and "Excuse me". I didn't mean to bump into you and I'm SO sorry!
