Edinburgh Castle a History with Pictures

Edinburgh Castle has a long and interesting history. It sits atop a volcanic plug in the centre of Edinburgh. And dominates the city. The first stronghold we know of in the spot of the present castle was Din Eidyn which was besieged and taken by the Angles in 638. The Angles renamed the city Edinburgh. The oldest building at Edinburgh castle is the 12th century chapel of Saint Margaret. Which was built by King David I. Who completed the Great Hall in 1511. Mary Queen of Scots. Gave birth to James VI.

The Battle of Bannockburn. June 23rd - June 24th, 1314. Edward II invaded Scotland in 1314 with the intention of relieving Stirling Castle. According to an agreement made in 1313 it would be surrendered to the Scots by midsummer 1314 unless it was relieved by a new English army. Edward brought 15,000 infantry and 2,500 cavalry north with him and they met Robert I. And his army of 8,000 infantry near Stirling. After the battle was won Bruces loyal knight Sir James Douglas.
