Critical Edition: Magnum Opus
http://crited.blogspot.com/2009/03/magnum-opus.html
This is dedicated to Theresa. I told you I'd write a story about it, but bear with me. This is my first stab at fiction since my freshman creative writing class.). There was so much sweat that Amanda reasoned it should make running easier – lubrication for her prematurely aged body. But instead of greased lightning, she felt more like a jalopy as the other runners flew by in a blur of tan, spandex and only delicately damp paper numbers. . 8221; She looked into her cup and then toward the counter, wond...

Books, the year in review. (Post idea stolen from April.). I've been inspired to revisit the books I've read in 2008 by April, who undoubtedly has way better taste than I do. But any excuse to talk about books, especially ones I've actually read, is certainly welcome. 1 A People's History of the United States. 160;by Howard Zinn. By Sena Jeter Naslund. 3 An Arsonist's Guide to Writers' Homes in New England. By Brock Clarke ( excellent book, you should read it.). 4 The Golden Notebook. By Toni Morrison (...

Critical Edition: Gandhi's stuff
http://crited.blogspot.com/2009/03/gandhis-stuff.html
This week James Otis auctioned off a collection of Gandhi's stuff he'd acquired over the years. There was a watch, his glasses and some other small things. The Indian government filed an (unsuccessful) injunction. To stop the auction so they could work on getting the artifacts back to India. Otis said he'd consider it if India promised to increase the amount of their budget spent on the poor from 1% to 5%. . I would imagine people would be pretty pissed off, and rightfully so. . This quid pro quo. Howeve...

Ain't No Woman Like the One I Got. For about a week a couple of years ago, my sister Sarah and I were really into the song "Ain't No Woman Like the One I Got," by the Four Tops. It was constantly in our heads. Well, actually, it was more like just the title line was in our heads. It became a supplement to pretty much every conversation we had. . Hey, I got my cell phone bill and it was astronomical. It's like, there ain't no woman like the one I got. Got Also, my phone bills are totally high. . Tales of ...

I know, it gets annoying, but I'm pretty proud of this scarf. Cables everywhere! Knitted baby blanket with crocheted flowers. I finally finished knitting the baby blanket for my ex-boss, who is due in January. I had collected money for materials from my co-workers before I got laid off. So since the money was all kicked in, I couldn't really just say "no" and keep the yarn the money purchased. Also, I like Jess, even though she's the person who had to lay me off. Stitch 'n' Bitch,. I blocked in lukewarm ...

Fifteen years ago, on Dec 23, my Grampa Schaefer died. It was hard for my parents to lose him, but I'm sure it was compounded by having two young kids to bundle up to take to Iowa for the funeral at Christmastime. A book that would soon become my favorite. I read that book on the way to Iowa with a concentration that resembled a religious trance. I was bundled in blankets and snow boots next to my sister Katie, warm except for the occasional icy contact with the frosty backseat window. Every year around ...

My year in books. I am a list junkie. Making lists is my meditation, me therapy. I love when the end of the year comes and everybody's coming out with their best-of lists. And 2009 has the added bonus of end-of-the-decade lists. I devour them as if they were the only things sustaining me. The Year of Living Biblically. The Outlaw Bible of American Essays. Edited by Alan Kaufman. A few good selections, but for the most part self-indulgent and vacuous. Huge and disturbing in the best way possible. Easy to ...
