Excuses, excuses… | Annelie and Dillon's Travelling Adventures
https://anneliemare.wordpress.com/2010/05/02/excuses-excuses
Annelie and Dillon's Travelling Adventures. Current trip: Basel (Switzerland) and Turkey. May 2, 2010. Excuses, excuses…. After a few long-haul journeys and some internet problems (first time on the trip, mind you) we’re something like two or three weeks behind on the blog! We did manage to spend a whole week on Zanzibar, by far the longest stay of the trip, and definitely one of the highlights. And yes, I braided my hair and took photos of how ridiculous it looked🙂. We even managed to spot giraffes, wi...
A moveable feast | Annelie and Dillon's Travelling Adventures
https://anneliemare.wordpress.com/2012/05/31/a-moveable-feast
Annelie and Dillon's Travelling Adventures. Current trip: Basel (Switzerland) and Turkey. May 31, 2012. Looking for somewhere to sit down. Chang beer tasty, but no good when it comes to washing down spicy food. Bouncing as she walked. She was even shorter than I am, but somehow, it felt safer…. Chinatown. Maybe a bad photo to illustrate how busy it was, but I didn’t have the camera out for those moments! Posted in Southeast Asia. Laquo; Hustle and bustle. Spicy fried frog and the temples of doom. You are...

https://anneliemare.wordpress.com/2010/04/21/gisenyi-goma-and-the-volcano-no-not-that-one
Annelie and Dillon's Travelling Adventures. Current trip: Basel (Switzerland) and Turkey. April 21, 2010. Gisenyi, Goma and the volcano (no, not that one). You don’t have to share the same goals to find these meetings interesting I quite vividly remember spending time with my dad at the Knysna yacht club, and meeting an American guy who quit his job as a computer programmer to sail around the world on his own (! So, back to business…. Now tourists can hike up the volcano and sleep by the lava lake at the...

Annelie and Dillon's Travelling Adventures. Current trip: Basel (Switzerland) and Turkey. April 11, 2010. Kigali, and stinging nettles in the mist. While I couldn’t. Blog about the genocide memorial, I’d like to point out that there is much, much more to this country than its painful history. Kigali itself is cosmopolitan and clean, with tree-lined suburban street and some high-rise buildings under construction in the city centre. It has a definite ‘upwardly mobile’-feel to it. As a r...From Kigali we he...
Bangkok, baby! | Annelie and Dillon's Travelling Adventures
https://anneliemare.wordpress.com/2012/05/28/bangkok-baby
Annelie and Dillon's Travelling Adventures. Current trip: Basel (Switzerland) and Turkey. May 28, 2012. Bangkok is everything we expected and hoped for, and more tall skyscrapers and wooden shacks all jumbled up together, with lush tropical trees and creepers everywhere. Busy streets, strange, spicy smells, food carts everywhere, cooked ducks with their necks bent back hanging from hooks in the steamy display cases. Crossing the streets is a bit scary. You can measure the intensity of the risk (tuk-t...

My happy Korean birthday | The Complainant in Asia
https://tarrynharbour.wordpress.com/2012/06/25/my-happy-korean-birthday
The Complainant in Asia. South Africa is home, but the world awaits. My happy Korean birthday. June 25, 2012. June 26, 2012. I wrote a while (okay, a LONG while) ago, telling you about Sylvia’s (aka my Island BFF) birthday. But I never wrote about mine. And while this year’s is lining up to be pretty epic (short version: half my family will be here! Yes, half. I have a big family), last year’s was awesome, and I want to tell y’all about it. Do you think I had enough parentheses in that paragraph? I wasn&...

The Complainant in Asia. South Africa is home, but the world awaits. School no. 2 and someone’s birthday. April 12, 2011. April 13, 2011. To recap: With about two hours’ of sleep the night before, and lingering jet lag, the inevitable happened on Tuesday morning: I overslept. Well, to be more specific, I slept straight through my alarm; I didn’t even remember hearing it ring. I awoke at 8:40am, precisely one hour. I was supposed to meet my second co-teacher outside my building to travel with her to school.

The Complainant in Asia. South Africa is home, but the world awaits. Temple Time: Making the Most of Your Three-Day Pass. June 11, 2014. 8220;Get the three-day pass. If you like looking at temples! 8221; a friend advised me before I left for Siem Reap, site of the famous and iconic Angkor Wat. “So many people bought a three-day pass and then got bored, stupid people.”. And at $20 for one day but $40 for three, it’s good value for money! Angkor Wat is not just the famous temple everyone knows from the pic...

Leaving Jeju | The Complainant in Asia

The Complainant in Asia. South Africa is home, but the world awaits. May 8, 2014. May 8, 2014. Apparently such a thing. As the Walrus said in. The time has come. But three years, it seems, is the cut-off point – for me, anyway. I need a break from the full-time job thing (ugh! Done I want a new challenge, something different, something exciting. A change of scenery. A change of lifestyle. A typical afternoon’s work. For the last six weeks I’ve been residing at the actual house. The two weeks after this a...
Winter is coming. | The Complainant in Asia
https://tarrynharbour.wordpress.com/2012/09/26/winter-is-coming
The Complainant in Asia. South Africa is home, but the world awaits. September 26, 2012. Why are you looking it me like that? Oh…the title… It was inevitable, ok. Just about everyone in the Northern Hemisphere who has read/ watched/ knows someone who has read/ watched. A Song of Ice and Fire. Epic series by American fantasy writer George R R “Please-hurry-up-and-finish-the-next-book” Martin) will be using this phrase as the cold season approaches. It’s totally a thing. Things to look forward to in winter:.
Battambang: More bang, less buck | The Complainant in Asia
https://tarrynharbour.wordpress.com/2014/07/16/battambang-more-bang-less-buck
The Complainant in Asia. South Africa is home, but the world awaits. Battambang: More bang, less buck. July 16, 2014. July 16, 2014. But actually, pronounced more like ‘Battambong’. Now you know. Opting for the cheaper, shorter bus ride over the longer, pricier, no doubt infinitely more hellish boat trip, I left Siem Reap late Sunday morning. I’d stayed there two nights more than originally planned, the last day being an out and out chill day by the pool, something I’d felt I needed! We spend the rest of...

May 24, 2014. 8220;You’re in paradise! 8221; a friend told me when I mentioned missing Jeju. “Funny,”I replied, “the weather makes it seem more like the other place…. Look, so far, Cambodia is great. I like the food, the vibe, the prospect of seeing these amazing ancient wonders up close. The next day I was up early to see the classic Angkor Wat at sunrise. Korea: Year 3. Wait, what? | The Complainant in Asia
https://tarrynharbour.wordpress.com/2013/07/08/korea-year-3-wait-what
The Complainant in Asia. South Africa is home, but the world awaits. Korea: Year 3. Wait, what? July 8, 2013. July 8, 2013. In which the author comes out of her laziness-imposed blog hiatus to tell you about staying in Korea for one more year. One of Korea’s national slogans is just two words: Dynamic Korea! What this means is that life in this country is very fast-paced and can change very quickly, with little to no warning. Clockwise from top left: last lunch in the (tiny) school cafeteria, farewell so...

Annelie and Dillon's Travelling Adventures | Current trip: Basel (Switzerland) and Turkey
Annelie and Dillon's Travelling Adventures. Current trip: Basel (Switzerland) and Turkey. June 14, 2012. Getting there (and back again). This seemed to amuse everyone on the bus greatly, so we received a second helping of fruit. A sweetish bread roll with sugary coconut in the middle followed, then two foot-long baguettes. Finally Dillon was given another baguette, and more bread! Posted in Southeast Asia. June 3, 2012. Spicy fried frog and the temples of doom. Carly deserves credit for encouraging us to...
