Anne meets Africa: Stuff, stuff, stuff

http://www.annemeetsafrica.blogspot.com/2012/04/stuff-stuff-stuff.html

Senegalese living for the Californian girl. Saturday, April 21, 2012. Stuff, stuff, stuff. Hey y’all. (I actually do say y’all here, due to the abundance of Southerners. Sorry. It’s science.). To start off this month’s blog, here are a couple common village insults and why they do not work on me:. 8220;You eat so many beans! So many, all the time! 8220;Yes, they’re delicious on sandwiches.”. 8220;You don’t grow corn/peanuts/rice, but you eat it! 8220;…Yep.”. Finally, the day I saw it, we called the husba...

Anne meets Africa: Rain, and it's crunch time!

http://www.annemeetsafrica.blogspot.com/2012/10/rain-and-its-crunch-time.html

Senegalese living for the Californian girl. Sunday, October 14, 2012. Rain, and it's crunch time! Let me tell you a little bit about rainy season in village. It. Is. Magical. It is also my excuse for not writing for the last three months; take it or leave it. 8211; one day around mid-June, when the heat and humidity has reached a point that makes the little voice in your head say “Alright, that’s it, it’s time to kill something”. Goats, on the other hand, hate rain. I guess so. Afternoon snack? My plan i...

Senegalese living for the Californian girl. Wednesday, October 12, 2011. Ok It’s been a while since my last post (as always) and a lot has happened. Actually, that’s a lie. We’re on Africa time. However, enough has happened to merit a blog update. You can look it up. Keep in mind that this also afflicts PCVs. Constant vigilance! Some exciting news: my amazing friend Becky is going to visit me for two weeks right after Christmas! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Anne meets Africa: March 2012

http://www.annemeetsafrica.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Senegalese living for the Californian girl. Wednesday, March 7, 2012. March 9 marks one year in Senegal. I’ve been thinking a lot recently about what I’ve learned and accomplished here in the last year – easy to do, with such an anniversary approaching, and with so much idle time in village to think. So here’s the culmination of that – I guess a sort of “State of my Service” address. 8221; I remember eating lasagna and drinking a cold beer – I think a Sam Adams. Who does that, really? But anyway. Ahem.

I Bless the Rains Down in Africa. 8220;Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? 8221; Mary Oliver. Monday, February 14, 2011. It's been a traumatic couple of days. If you haven't been, I highly recommend it. Not only is all of the food delicious, they sell PBRs at the bar and there is also live country music most nights. Next time, I'm bringing my cowboy boots and starting a line dance. Once dinner was finished, it was time to head back uptown where the remainder of Friday...

This Senegalese Life: Good Hair and New Friends

http://thissenegaleselife.blogspot.com/2013/04/good-hair.html

Thursday, April 18, 2013. Good Hair and New Friends. A couple weeks ago I got my hair braided for the first time. After my mom got her hair braided in during her visit Mariama Kesso decided that she would also braid my hair before I left. So the day finally came, I bought some meches. Extensions and she went to work. Once we were all coiffed and fancy we put on our complet. Outfits and headed out to introduce everyone to the Peace Corps Volunteer who'll be arriving in May to install in Salémata. As soon ...

I Bless the Rains Down in Africa. 8220;Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? 8221; Mary Oliver. Sunday, June 19, 2011. Family (American, that is). I'll be really honest with you, the hardest part about being here, is being so far away from friends and family and feeling like you may be missing out on things back home. Especially on a day like today (it's Father's Day, in case you missed the title of this blog post). As I am still in Dakar (ugh! Corps de la Paix. Mail fr...

I have stayed the last two nights at my regional house and this afternoon I will return (equipped with a stick bed AND a bag of cement for a outdoor cement bed. Celebration? I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I am back in the med hut in Dakar yet again. I've been here since Wednesday night. I Bless the Rains Down in Africa. 8220;Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? 8221; Mary Oliver. Wednesday, June 15, 2011. A pretty intense blog title don't you think? And what could I be talking about you ask? Mosquitos. In the 3 and 1/2 months since I've been in Senegal I've come to decide that they are the enemy, the ultimate enemy. Forget serial killers and terrorists, kidnappers and Republicans (oops, did I say that last one out loud? Doesn't that just look evil?

This Senegalese Life: January 2013

http://thissenegaleselife.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 25, 2013. Siblings Abroad: The Island Life. One of the nice things about Praia are these little outdoor gyms plunked down along the shoreline - I thought they were playgrounds for kids (and kids do seem to like them) but there were a decent number of adults using them, too. Also, tidepools. The sunrise was nice, and the shadow of the peak on the rim of the caldera was really neat. At the tippy top there was a part where you had to scramble up and over using a cable hand-rail, and, feeling...

Memories

A writing exercise turning vague memories into flash fiction. Sunday, March 22, 2009. Absurd. I sat, staring down at the blank piece of paper. Absurd was the only word to describe the situation. As punishment I was being forced to write lines. The phrase “I will not break things that do not belong to me” covered eight complete sheets of paper front and back. Only two more sheets left to go. How I wished to be with them! Why this pointless exercise? As I scribbled “I will not break things that do no...

Sing. Play. Love.

Tuesday, August 18, 2015. Under the header of “I am not making this up,” I recently observed a young child try to swipe the cover of a paper picture book like an iPad in order to view the pages. I do believe that digital books read on a screen can be an alternative to paper books for school-aged kids, as long as there is a balance between this medium and paper books. However, I am an ardent believer in paper books – and paper books only – for children under the age of five. And here’s why…. If you are as...
