Still in the Running. Thoughts on beginning to run in mid-life, running up against everyday obstacles, and wanting to run forever. November 11, 2011 1 Comment. We all know life is not really like that, but somehow I for one still get surprised by how long and varied the adversity can last in real life. (And I’ve had it pretty easy! November 12, 2011 at 5:12 am. I know it’s cliche but it’s true…it’s not so much about the end result as it is about the journey. So good for you to...Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Still in the Running. Thoughts on beginning to run in mid-life, running up against everyday obstacles, and wanting to run forever. November 3, 2011. In running they call eating “fueling.” It sounds kind of gross, as though eating were not a pleasure just a necessary function. Eat something light before an early morning weekday run even if you are not hungry. Get up earlier and eat something substantial two hours before a long run. Have some energy drink or eat a gel every half hour during a long run.

Still in the Running. Thoughts on beginning to run in mid-life, running up against everyday obstacles, and wanting to run forever. January 24, 2013 2 Comments. At one time, Laos was called the land of a million elephants. Now there are only 1600 elephants left in the country. About one third of these are wild, living in the jungle. Two thirds have grown up in captivity, domesticated beasts of burden, employed in the logging industry. Or foreigners, like us, so in order to keep a male elephant, a camp mus...

Still in the Running. Thoughts on beginning to run in mid-life, running up against everyday obstacles, and wanting to run forever. January 22, 2013 2 Comments. On Wednesday we travelled from Bangkok to Cambodia. We set the alarm for 4:00 am. We ate nuts and crackers, dried fruit and chocolate. We drank water. Warm air rushed into the train off the fields. Ancient fans blew hot air from the ceiling. We drank more water. I headed for the washroom while the others faced the crowd of tuk tuk drivers, each of...

Still in the Running. Thoughts on beginning to run in mid-life, running up against everyday obstacles, and wanting to run forever. January 31, 2013 5 Comments. We arrived at Luang Prabang in the dark. Rattling into town in a taxi van, I felt homesick and tired of arriving in new places. At the Hotel Lotus Villa, a young clerk checked us in, trying to persuade me to commit to various activities for the next few days. You must get up early to see the monks, he insisted. We hired a boat, driver and guide, t...

8220;The Great Affair is to move.” – Robert Louis Stevenson. Welcome to a blog about books, travel and gear. September 27, 2010 in Uncategorized. It’s been a summer of water and the road. July 4th weekend, our friends Holly and Jeff had invited us to her parent’s place on Chebeague Island, Maine, off the coast of Portland. We drove to a park n’ ride to hop a bus to the ferry that would take us the island. You know it’s a laid-back kinda place when the parking lot sports a hammock. The island was heaven&#...

Anne Miller - Mother, Teacher, Friend, and Artist

Anne Miller - Mother, Teacher, Friend, and Artist. Saturday, January 31, 2015. I sure miss you, Mom. Thursday, December 23, 2010. Thursday, January 29, 2009. Your Joy is Your Sorrow Unmasked. Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears. And how else can it be? The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain. Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven?

Still in the Running. Thoughts on beginning to run in mid-life, running up against everyday obstacles, and wanting to run forever. February 5, 2013. Our guide’s name was Sene (sen). The Mekong Delta is a vast and continuous village, stretching in all directions. Unlike rural Canada, there are people everywhere, and it seemed that every single one of these folks was inexplicably pleased to see us. Older people greeted us with the Vietnamese. Little children rushed at us in groups, yelling. Some pathways w...
