I am currently working on my first book, A Greedy Queen, due to be published with Profile Books in spring 2017 (shortlisted for the Jane Grigson Trust Award). Meanwhile I have a host of articles, on and offline. I also have an occasional blog, wherein I sketch some of my thoughts about food, history and culture. For all literary enquiries, please contact Tim Bates at Peters Fraser Dunlop ( tbates@pfd.co.uk. The myth of seasonality in the past. Scotland in Trust Magazine. BBC Good Food Magazine:.

I love lecturing. It’s a joy to be able to take the results of many a dusty archive trawl and make them come alive, and if I can persuade people to try a couple of recipes from their grandmother’s Mrs Beeton, or visit a country house and see it in a whole new light, then I know I am doing my job. I am an accredited NADFAS. Lecturer, as well as hosting talks, tastings and occasionally workshops in heritage sites across the UK. Off the peg’ lectures (*denotes current NADFAS title). Picking up a recipe book, from any era, makes me immediately want to dash into a kitchen. Through my work in costume I’ve gained an understanding of the trials and tribulations of working in corsets and bulky gowns, and I extend this experiential approach into preparing and eating food from different eras. So, dig out that old copy of Mrs Beeton, and delve into a good suet pudding. To contact me regarding historical food provision or anything else, click here. Gutenberg.org - eBooks.

I have worked widely across both TV and radio. I am the resident food historian on BBC Radio 4’s The Kitchen Cabinet, and have been on the panel since the show’s inception in 2012. I also presented Victorian Bakers on BBC2 in 2016 and am a regular contributor to many other shows, including James Martin: Home Comforts. Behind the scenes I advise on food and the social history around it, including for the award-winning Calf’s Head and Coffee (BBC4). For media enquiries, please contact me directly. On the o...

Since 2005 I've worked in costume across various sites, in eras ranging from the early medieval, to the 1940s, though frankly I'm happiest in periods with decent corsetry and after the introduction of tea to Britain. I continue to perform in and out of character, usually portraying Georgian and Victorian cooks, but I have also moved into a training role, working especially with volunteers to bring alive below stairs areas. I specialise in the history of food and dining in Britain from around 1600 to the present day,. And I research this both in libraries and in my own (and other’s) kitchens. Food is a brilliant way to get under the skin of past societies: everyone eats, and the choices we make reflect who we are and what we believe and that’s as true for the Georgians as it is for us today. Not only that, but I firmly believe that the recipes and techniques of the past are as exciting and relevant now as they have ever been.
