Monday, February 21, 2005. Gonzo" journalism was his oeuvre, so named for his own efforts to view the power structure and political process through a chemically-induced haze while thumbing his nose at not just politicians, but all authority figures, mad or sane. Thompson lived as he wrote, seemingly unapologetic for his methods and manner, and steadfast in his beliefs. About a year ago, I began reading his first novel, The Rum Diary. Was in his eighties and died Saturday of natural causes. Sandra Dee...

Sunday, November 21, 2004. Which benefits from sounds that are not embarrassing, is absolutely commanding and provokes a sharp emotional response. However, on this most recent Sunday morning, I saw a few scenes from The Country Bears. Walken, in true vaudevillian fashion, turned sharply to see nothing. When he turned back, the slow-moving bear was several hundred feet away, safely on his front porch. I found the subtle foolishness of this scene endearing and went back to my paper. The image of Christophe...

Monday, May 30, 2005. Apropos of nothing, part 7. I am leery of anything that everyone says is good.like pilates, Million Dollar Baby. Or this local rib house we attended today for a pleasant Memorial Day luncheon. Crys' parents clamor after the place, saying it is smack-smack good. I should have objected right then and there. After saying this, my lovely wife snorted so hard that she almost lost control of both her car and sinuses. The slaw, however, was rather tasty. And look away whenever they zoom in...

These are the biggest personal disappointments and the worst games I played all year. James Bond 007: Everything Or Nothing / Onimusha 3: Demon Seige. Destruction Derby Arenas / Fight Club / Syphon Filter: Omega Strain. Playing a game. So. In need of a shower. Reprehensible g...

Wednesday, June 29, 2005. We went to our local googleplex tonight and saw War of the Worlds. That multi-million-dollar thingie Tom Cruise was supposed to be promoting as he recently hopped from couch to table to Katie to Matt Lauer's Enemies List. Movie star behavioral issues aside, director Steven Spielberg can be proud of his film, which is effective to such a degree that I almost wish it were not so. This is the man who brought dinosaurs so seamlessly to life in Jurassic Park. Posted by scn at 7:11 PM.

Saturday, January 29, 2005. Nominations from the other side. This goes out to anyone who likes a little hot Asian action. This week's Oscar nominations included two Asian entries: House Of Flying Daggers. Received a nod for Cinematography (and runs a tight race against aforementioned The Aviator. As well as A Very Long Engagement. And The Passion Of The Christ. Which, despite your opinions of those films, are all unquestionably gorgeous works), and The Story Of The Weeping Camel. And Running On Karma.
