Appalachian Treks: Hikes

http://appalachiantreks.blogspot.com/p/hikes.html

Many of my favorite hikes are to waterfalls - so be sure to look under the Waterfalls tab. For a listing of those great hikes. As you can tell from my list, most of the hikes here are one to three mile hikes (one way) - some are so easy as to be considered 'walks'! But to me hiking isn't about distance or difficulty.it's a state of mind. :) For a discussion of the best one-night hikes in our area, click here. For a list of area hiking clubs, click here. Do you have a favorite hike in our area? AT to Uncl...

Appalachian Treks: risking to live

http://appalachiantreks.blogspot.com/2008/04/risking-to-live.html

Monday, April 21, 2008. The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn and feel and change and grow and love and live. 1924-1998) author and professor. I'm not sure this quote has anything to do with the photo above, but I thought it was great and wanted to share! Maybe it means you should play hooky today and explore U naka. This shot was taken from a favorite vantage point on Unaka. Mountain Road)&#...

Appalachian Treks: Overlooks

http://appalachiantreks.blogspot.com/p/overlooks_08.html

I'm often asked,. Where do I go to get great views of the mountains? This list is by no means exhaustive of all of the terrific overlooks in our area, but it's a start. Feel free to leave a comment and let us know your favorite place to take in wide open views of the mountains or to catch a sunset. Indicates vantage points that you can access either by driving directly to them or with minimal walking or hiking involved. Indicates those overlooks which are great places to see a sunset. Simple Gifts: February 2012

http://formerbubb.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

They're everywhere if you only look. Friday, February 17, 2012. I do believe that this is the first winter since we've lived here that I haven't taken a TON of photos every time it snows. Although we have not had all that much snow this year as compared to the past few years. The kids have only had 3 snow days so far this winter. That is very different from all the other winters we've experienced here. We've only had accumulation from 4 snow showers this year, I think? Have I become bored and jaded?

http://homeschoolinghomesteadinginthepresent.blogspot.com/2014/07/my-son-incredibly-enormously-super-cute.html

Homeschooling and Homesteading in the Present. Thursday, July 10, 2014. My Son, the Incredibly Enormously Super Cute Human Bobble Head. So, my son was holding this darling little kitten and I was snapping pictures from all directions because .HELLO? Cute kid kitten = slobbering, glaze eyed adorableness! As I was looking back through my pictures, I found this. THIS.PICTURE. One of my favorite EVER pictures. I get a sugar high every time I look at it. Can you even stand the cuteness? I can't quit looking.

Homeschooling and Homesteading in the Present: May 2013

http://homeschoolinghomesteadinginthepresent.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Homeschooling and Homesteading in the Present. Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Type 1 and Type 2 Pain. I have, within the past couple of years, come face to face with two different types of pain. I know there are more types, but I'm good with not experiencing those any time soon. I'm sure Type 1 serves a purpose. It encourages personal growth and a seeker's heart. The second pain I'm not so sure about. Does it provide any growth? Can it serve in any beneficial capacity? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Ah, the garden.

Ruminations from the Distant Hills: February 2011

http://gulahiyi.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 27, 2011. I remember my earliest excursions. On the Horsepasture River. Thirty years ago, it was a word-of-mouth find. This was before the publication of dozens of new hiking maps, trail guides and waterfall books that direct you to the most obscure treasures of the mountains. This was before the Internet! Fortunately, that point is within view of Highway 281 and also within view of Drift Falls, the first waterfall downstream from the highway bridge. Rainbow Falls, approximately 125 ...

Appalachian Treeworks - Treenware and Dulcimers in the Appalachian Tradition

Arly settlers in the Southern Appalachians made most of what they needed from the forests around them. Trees were plentiful around a 19th century homestead, but nothing was wasted. Wood that wasn't good for timber-framing could be used for fences, furniture, carts and sledges. Smaller pieces made roof shingles and treenware, and anything left over was fuel for the fireplace. They even made their own music, with instruments they crafted themselves.
