What is a Pilot Gig? The Cornish Gig is a six oared rowing boat, almost ten metres long, built of elm. Originally they were used as general purpose work boats and inshore lifeboats. The tradition of racing gigs comes from the race to get a pilot. From shore to an incoming vessel which needed the pilot to navigate into harbour - the fastest gig rowers got the payment. Built for RAF St Mawgan in 2015. Based at Newquay Rowing Club. Repairs and repaint, 2014, belongs to Bude Gig Club. Iron Maid" - Built 2006.

Welcome to Appledore Pilot Gig Club. We’re an independent, community-based sea-rowing club. We row and race traditional Cornish Pilot Gigs. We’re based in the fishing port of Appledore at the mouth of the Rivers Taw and Torridge. We compete in regattas around the South West as part of the Cornish Pilot Gig Association.
