Notes on books, films and other armchair adventures. August 16, 2011. Lately I've been on a reading frenzy, but haven't had time to write and post reviews, so just a note to myself that the following books deserve their due in the coming days:. Barbara Kingsolver (two thumbs up! 2) La Sorcière de Portobello (The Witch of Portobello). Paulo Coelho (ickkk what was. Charlaine Harris (had to do a fluff reading I knew I would love to wash out the bad taste Coelho left). 4) The Eyre Affair. August 15, 2011.

Rose's Reading: World Book Night - getting ever closer

http://rosesyear.blogspot.com/2012/04/world-book-night-getting-ever-closer.html

Sunday, 8 April 2012. World Book Night - getting ever closer. In the run-up, I've signed up to the World Book Night facebook page - and I'm not normally a fan of organisations/companies doing marketing via facebook. But for a tiny organisation, I think they're doing a great job - and I'm really enjoying their posts and links to other good stuff. Some of the best things I've seen there include. A silent film about. How Slightly Foxed hardbacks are made. And a set of. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

http://rosesyear.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Monday, 12 September 2011. 50 books - and then some. This is my fourth year of a fifty-book challenge - and for reasons that are mysterious to me, Im well ahead of the pace. Normally Ive managed 50-55 books, including last year an emergency pride-saving push over Christmas. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Rosesyear *at* gmail *dot* com. Rose's Reading: December 2011

http://rosesyear.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, 29 December 2011. A good book is the best of friends. The same today and forever. Martin Tupper (1810-89) wrote this in an essay 'On Reading' in 1838 - I've got it from my fantastic new Christmas present of the. Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. I am LOVING this book, its so browsable and read-aloud-able. I actually think he's wrong in that. A) real people and good friends are WAY better than books (except maybe. Links to this post. Rose's Reading: Words are the daughters of earth, and [...] things are the sons of heaven

http://rosesyear.blogspot.com/2012/02/words-are-daughters-of-earth-and-things.html

Sunday, 19 February 2012. Words are the daughters of earth, and [.] things are the sons of heaven. Another quote from my Dictionary of Quotations - from Samuel Johnson's preface to his mid-C18 dictionary. It's an interesting inversion of what I think many people would assume. Johnson thinks of words as concrete and earth-bound - which is how I think of 'things'. He says that things are 'the sons of heaven' - but surely that is more the realm of words with their lack of substance but incredible power?

Rose's Reading: Satur-Hay

http://rosesyear.blogspot.com/2011/05/satur-hay.html

Sunday, 29 May 2011. Second session was 'Cold Places' with Sue Flood (a nature photographer) showing pictures and talking about her work and career. Beautiful images. And then the first half of Man U- Barca, followed by Sandi Toksvig and Sue Perkins. Glad we didn't stay to see Man U get beaten, and Sandi and Sue were funny but not amazing. Finally, beer and wine then a tiddly toddle back down to our field. 29 May 2011 at 10:12. 31 May 2011 at 22:42. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Hi ho, hi ho.

Rose's Reading: Fictional FLOTUSes...

http://rosesyear.blogspot.com/2011/02/fictional-flotuses_19.html

Saturday, 19 February 2011. So here's the real and long-mulled-over post on American Wife and Primary Colours. It's the first time I've written at any length about novels since I left university, and I'm definitely out of practice. I've wanted to see the film for ever, but never tracked it down. Finally saw the book in Waterstones and lashed out. I picked it up on the man's recommendation, after he'd read it for his book club and loved it. Was I mutable, without a fixed identity? Rose's Reading: It's funny how your memory of a book shifts

http://rosesyear.blogspot.com/2012/01/its-funny-how-your-memory-of-book.html

Tuesday, 24 January 2012. It's funny how your memory of a book shifts. Looking back at my year's reading (a bit late, I know), I've realised that the books that win an instant 5* rating as I finish them are not the same as the books that I'd now judge to be highlights. My best reads of 2011 - the ones that I loved, that I've talked about and recommended, and that I think I'll read again were. When God Spoke English - I blogged about this while at Hay. The Hare with Amber Eyes;. Reading Fuelled By Tea.

Rose's Reading: Stop what you're doing. Keep calm. Read a book.

http://rosesyear.blogspot.com/2012/02/stop-what-youre-doing-keep-calm-read.html

Sunday, 5 February 2012. Stop what you're doing. Keep calm. Read a book. Preaching to the choir? Celebrating a shared passion? Marshalling the defence of what makes us human? Why publish a book called 'Stop what you're doing and read this'. Why contribute to it? Why demand that people make time to read essays about the value and importance of reading fiction? And it's also getting a fair bit of blog coverage. You don't have to travel to enjoy a piece of writing. And there is no performance, either. S...

Rose's Reading: January 2012

http://rosesyear.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, 26 January 2012. Divorced, Beheaded, Survived. It can't have been much fun to be Queen in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. For that matter I doubt it was much fun being a woman (or being anything) in those days - at least, not by comparison to the ease, comfort and variety of our lives today. I've been reading a whole range of books about Queens in the middle ages and early modern period, including Alison Weir's book on Eleanor of Aquitaine. And The White Queen. All credit due to Yvann at.

Rose's Reading: She was a woman in a crowd, surrounded but alone

http://rosesyear.blogspot.com/2011/11/she-was-woman-in-crowd-surrounded-but.html

Saturday, 19 November 2011. She was a woman in a crowd, surrounded but alone. The Report by Jessica Francis Kane is a superb, heartbreaking, human read. It's a fiction-based-on-fact retelling of the 1943 disaster at the Bethnal Green tube station/bomb shelter. 173 people died on the stairs into the shelter, crushed to death in the crowd on a night when no bombs were dropped on London. I read this book because two reviews - by Rachel at. Roses over a cottage door. 16 December 2011 at 13:13.
