The Asheville Gardener: Beets - From the Garden to the Table

http://ashevillegardener.blogspot.com/2010/06/beets-from-garden-to-table.html

Friday, June 18, 2010. Beets - From the Garden to the Table. I never liked beets as a kid. Maybe it's because my Mom tried to pass off mushy canned beets as being edible, or maybe it's because I was overly picky. Whatever the reason, I hadn't eaten a beet in many years until I found them in my salad last Fall at Bouchon. I sowed a 9' row of Red Cloud Hybrid Beets. Beets are pretty tough when they're raw, so it's best to give them a light sauteing to soften them up and bring out their sweet flavor. Saute ...

The Asheville Gardener: First Squash of the Season

http://ashevillegardener.blogspot.com/2010/06/first-squash-of-season.html

Friday, June 25, 2010. First Squash of the Season. I had a lot of miscellaneous squash seed left-over from past gardening years that I decided to use up this year before adding to the collection. I ended up with 3 Crookneck Improved from Park's Seeds, and 2 Golden Dawn and 1 Raven Zucchini from Renee's Garden. I really like the Golden Dawn ( pictured on the front row. Squash will become exhausted in the heat of the Summer and start to die back. To keep the garden full of squash all season long, sow a...

3 Mountain Girls: November 2014

http://3mountaingirls.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Discovering the love for life and learning. Saturday, November 8, 2014. Halloween - - Snow. Fun and shenanigans is usually the theme of Halloween around here. It also seems to be the theme for everything else I'm involved in as well, but that's another story. Cold temperatures and heavy rains arrived right at the start of trick or treat time. Luckily Dave and neighbor Steve and their innovative ideas gave us nothing to fear. We had a double bonus the next morning. As we woke to a wintery wonderland.

3 Mountain Girls: June 2014

http://3mountaingirls.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Discovering the love for life and learning. Thursday, June 26, 2014. It was such a nice surprise to get a text from a good friend to invite us to the beach for a weekend. Our good friends left Asheville in September to move to Oregon. Though we still see them every now and again, I do miss the impromptu dinners, parties, and talks we had. My friend Maria and I packed up the kids and took the 4 hour trek to Folly Beach so we can see our good friends and our kids can reunite with their BFFs. Luckily, I had...

3 Mountain Girls: Canvas, crayons, and paint, oh my!

http://3mountaingirls.blogspot.com/2015/01/canvas-crayons-and-paint-oh-my.html

Discovering the love for life and learning. Sunday, January 18, 2015. Canvas, crayons, and paint, oh my! I found a stash of blank canvases in my hoard, um, I mean craft supply area. We decided to experiment with some new techniques during our Crafternoon last weekend. One fun project we always wanted to try was the melted crayons on canvas. It was easier and quicker than I thought. I'll stop here and mention what we learned by trial and error:. They fell off quickly. Next we tried some old fashioned sten...

Discovering the love for life and learning. Friday, December 19, 2014. I really believe this kid knew more about the universe than me the day she was born. That look of knowing and wonder never ceases to amaze me. We had a great birthday week filled with friends, fun, The Nutcracker, and wild parties. Here's to being 8, and so far it's been great :). 3 Mountain Girls: September 2014

http://3mountaingirls.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Discovering the love for life and learning. Friday, September 26, 2014. Fall is definitely in the air here in our NC mountains. We've been falling into our rhythm since school started and are enjoying a new routine. It seems our summers become more full but yet less structured. We do feel a sense of renewal even though we are forced into a daily routine of school and work that is dictated by reasonable bedtimes and early alarms. They still love to find matching jackets for chilly mornings. As the girls g...

Discovering the love for life and learning. Wednesday, December 17, 2014. Handmade Holidays: Bottle Cap Candles and Lotions. There's nothing like last minute crafting! We were scheming for quite some time about what we would create this year, and we are so excited to share! Our first gift was born from our love of essential oils. We have been reading about the healing effects and health benefits from certain oils and decided to mix up some of our own concoctions. We knew we wanted to make candles this ye...

Discovering the love for life and learning. Wednesday, January 29, 2014. Minding our own beeswax. And that's just what we've been doing, staying inside and keeping to ourselves. The girls came down with the flu (at the same time)! And I'm not feeling too hot myself. Nothing a good hot toddy can't fix- more on that at the end of this post. I remembered I had a few sheets of beeswax and we got into making some candles. It is such a simple process, I forgot how fun it is for all ages. We all liked the "clea...

http://3mountaingirls.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Discovering the love for life and learning. Sunday, February 16, 2014. Our last minute valentines. With all the snow fun and outdoor play, we hardly had time to craft during one of our favorite times of the year. We missed school most of last week, which bought us some time to scramble around for class valentines. This was a real quickie, but they turned out kind of cute. We used a roll of brown mailing wrapping paper and cut out hearts. We took two hearts and sewed them part way together. We had a few m...

Elise ’s Happenings and Wonderings…. Just a blog about me and life…. Tomorrow Noah will be 12. It is so hard to believe. The past year has been rough for him (and the rest of us), but he has pulled out of it like a champ. He came home with a report card a few days ago containing all As and Bs! Conduct grades were all Es and Ss! I could not be prouder of how hard he’s working. Here’s to a wonderful new year. In one year my baby will be a teenager. Sigh. On March 25, 2009 at 5:03 am Comments (4). Will one ...
