The Burrow: Sidebars Gone By
http://ashleighburroughs.blogspot.com/p/sidebars-gone-by.html
Make Your Voices Heard. These are the compiled side-bars for the past few months. See what Ashleigh's been reading and digging and hearing and seeing. July 4, 2016. The Summer Before the War - Helen Simonson's gentle story of the lead up to World War I is stunning. She goes from Jane Austen to the trenches without missing a beat. Born on a Tuesday - Elnathan John's haunting story of boys caught in Islam's war against itself. Brilliant, terrifying, horribly sad. Confirmation - See it! Miss Julie - August ...

The Burrow: My Teacher is Special Because.......
http://ashleighburroughs.blogspot.com/2015/05/my-teacher-is-special-because.html
Make Your Voices Heard. Wednesday, May 6, 2015. My Teacher is Special Because. Helped the kids at Prince Elementary make Teacher Appreciation Cards today. It was rarely this peaceful. Imagine 60 third graders racing across the playground, yelling GRANNY! They were followed by littler ones. Some of whom took to the ground because there was no room at the tables. It was a unisex event -. Everyone loves the teachers at Prince. There were thoughtful notes. It's true, her teacher is so(w) nice (nis). The kids...
The Burrow: May 2015
http://ashleighburroughs.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Make Your Voices Heard. Friday, May 29, 2015. ContainTucson - It's Here! Tucson has hit the big time. As our population base for commercial purposes inches past one million, retailers become more interested in us. So, when Toby Keith's bar and restaurant (no weapons allowed, thank you very much) went out of business, leaving a curbside, 20,000 square foot space available in the biggest mall in town, look who thought we were worthy. Posted about it and I started my happy dance. My name is Ashleigh. And I ...
The Burrow: A Different Kind of Pleasure
http://ashleighburroughs.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-different-kind-of-pleasure.html
Make Your Voices Heard. Wednesday, May 13, 2015. A Different Kind of Pleasure. Different books bring me different pleasures. That innocuous sentence took a look of thinking before it ended up in pixels on your screen. Not that the rest of my work is slipshod and fast off the fingertips, bypassing my brain entirely (this has been said, with much truth, about my speech, at times) but some sentences carry more import than others. Of course, you're thinking, finishing Ulysses. I'm a big James Patterson fan&#...

The personal and genealogical archives, and Black Mountain NC scenery and my potting life are combined. It's a good thing. Thursday, March 12, 2015. Well, not much bounding about, but the women from whom I'm descended, who gave me some mitochondrial DNA, are many and wonderful. But on one sheet of paper, the marriage records of N...

The Next Stage: Women and Retirement: I have snowdrops and crocus, but where are the daffodils??
http://www.the-next-stage.com/2015/04/i-have-snowdrops-and-crocus-but-where.html
Thursday, April 2, 2015. I have snowdrops and crocus, but where are the daffodils? I have snowdrops and crocus, but where are the daffodils? I have been keeping garden notes since 1996 and this is the first spring that I have not had daffodils blooming by April 1. The earth may be warming, but that’s sure not the case in my garden. (I am not a climate change denier, just an impatient gardener.). I am so impatient for the show to to begin! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Enter your email address:.
The Next Stage: Women and Retirement: The hydrangeas are back!
http://www.the-next-stage.com/2015/07/the-hydrangeas-are-back.html
Thursday, July 2, 2015. The hydrangeas are back! Nikko Blue is back. 2014 was the year without hydrangeas—or at least without my beloved hydrangea macrophylla AKA mopheads. Unlike the mopheads, the lacecaps can apparently survive the most brutal winter and I did have lacecap hydrangeas in 2014. I was really afraid that the exceptionally cold winter of 2015 would mean another summer without hydrangea macrophylla. To my great relief that did not occur. Endless summer is purple in my front yard.
The Next Stage: Women and Retirement: After this miserable cold winter, I so enjoyed the Philadelphia Flower Show
http://www.the-next-stage.com/2015/02/after-this-miserable-cold-winter-i-so.html
Saturday, February 28, 2015. After this miserable cold winter, I so enjoyed the Philadelphia Flower Show. After this miserable cold winter, I so enjoyed the Philadelphia Flower Show. I went to Friday afternoon’s Members’ Preview which was surprisingly uncrowded. (I have been to Members’ Previews that were more crowded than the regular Flower Show.). Tuberous begonias at entrance to the flower show. This is what I love about gardening, there’s always another season, another opportunity to try to get...
Allison's Post Work Thinking - now that I have time to think: Seafair Weekend and The Blue Angels
http://retiredbicycle.blogspot.com/2014/08/seafair-weekend-and-blue-angels.html
Allison's Post Work Thinking - now that I have time to think. Friday, August 1, 2014. Seafair Weekend and The Blue Angels. The bridge, she is closed. There's a dog in the back seat, the air conditioning was running for him for the entire event. I think it's pretty amazing that they close the bridge and have an air show over the lake in a densely populated area. This was the opening act. They are the Patriots Jet Team. Later in the show, another Huey came in and took them away. Is a Marine plane. It's...
The Next Stage: Women and Retirement: August 2015

Thursday, August 20, 2015. Florence is worth all the hassles:The Italy Diaries, Part VI. Despite all the hassles of driving in Florence, this city was worth every bit of pain. (And there was pain.)It is without a doubt one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Portrait of Galileo in the Uffizzi. If there's a next time in Florence, I'll make sure to see the Susterman portraits in the Uffizi. Facade of Santa Maria Novella. Wednesday, August 12, 2015. But despite all this complaining, I love, love Italy....
The Next Stage: Women and Retirement: The Wyck Rose Garden has inspired me to try again to grow old roses
http://www.the-next-stage.com/2015/06/the-wyck-rose-garden-has-inspired-me-to.html
Sunday, June 7, 2015. The Wyck Rose Garden has inspired me to try again to grow old roses. Last week I finally got it together to go to the Wyck Rose Garden. I can’t believe that despite living in Northwest Philly for the past 50(! Years, this was my first visit to the Wyck Rose Garden. For many years I tried to grow old roses—-mostly in partial sun. I remember their names: Madame Hardy, Pierre Oger, La Reine, Rose de Rescht. I loved them, and I lost them all. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
The Next Stage: Women and Retirement: Verona’s Magical Old Town: The Northern Italy diaries, Part II
http://www.the-next-stage.com/2015/03/veronas-magical-old-town-northern-italy.html
Saturday, March 21, 2015. Verona’s Magical Old Town: The Northern Italy diaries, Part II. Gothic spires of the Scaliger Tombs. We now try to do no more than 2 hours driving per day, so we took several days to drive from Venice to Fiesole where we had rented an apartment. Our first stop was Verona. We were there in the 1980’s and it was one of my all time favorite travel experiences. On a gorgeous summer night we heard La Gioconda. Verona has one of the most magical old towns in Italy and it was worth all...
The Next Stage: Women and Retirement: Maybe it takes a really hard winter to appreciate spring
http://www.the-next-stage.com/2015/05/maybe-it-takes-really-hard-winter-to.html
Friday, May 1, 2015. Maybe it takes a really hard winter to appreciate spring. Cercis Canadensis AKA Redbud. Maybe it takes a really hard winter to appreciate spring but I’ve been enjoying—intensely enjoying- every moment of the Spring of 2015. Yes I lost a few plants, but the ones which survived are doing really, really well. My early blooming deciduous rhododendron—Cornell’s Pink—has never looked so good. Cornell’s Pink rhododendron. And the daffodils when they finally arrived have been spectacular.
