Hong Kong, Macao, and Singapore (so far)
The Rest of Asia: Places at JamesBaquet.com: July 2009
http://asia.jamesbaquet.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
Other Asian locations: Hong Kong, Macao, and Singapore (so far). More about my travels in Asia. Earth God Platform, Ping Shan, New Territories, Hong Kong. When you're walking in the Cantonese countryside, whether in Hong Kong or Guangdong, you often find these peculiar little altars in the villages. (I've even seen them in ultra-modern Shenzhen.). Sometimes they feature statues, but often, like this one, they're much simpler, as befits veneration of the Earth God. A slightly more frontal view. The word "...
The Rest of Asia: Places at JamesBaquet.com: Four Generals (?), Man Mo Temple, Central Hong Kong
http://asia.jamesbaquet.com/2009/07/four-generals-man-mo-temple-central.html
Other Asian locations: Hong Kong, Macao, and Singapore (so far). More about my travels in Asia. Man Mo Temple, Central Hong Kong. The first temple I ever visited in Hong Kong (back in 2004, my first year in China) was the famous Man Mo Temple. On Hollywood Road in Central. Man and Mo are Cantonese for Wen and Wu; Wen is Wen Chang, a deified scholar who is now considered a god of literature, and Wu is Wu Di (Warrior God) better known as Guan Yu or Guan Di, patron of soldiers and police officers. Here are ...
The Rest of Asia: Places at JamesBaquet.com: A-Ma Temple, Macau
http://asia.jamesbaquet.com/2009/06/ma-temple-macau.html
Other Asian locations: Hong Kong, Macao, and Singapore (so far). More about my travels in Asia. A-Ma Temple, Macau. The A-Ma Temple is one of the oldest temples in Macau, having been built in 1488, and is certainly the most famous. It is believed to have lent its name to Macau itself. When the Portuguese arrived less than a century later, we're told, they asked the name of the place, then known as Haojing. Oyster Mirror) or Jinghai. Hence the name Macau. Here's the main altar, lit only by the light from ...
The Rest of Asia: Places at JamesBaquet.com: The Ruins of Saint Paul's, Macau
http://asia.jamesbaquet.com/2009/07/ruins-of-saint-pauls-macau.html
Other Asian locations: Hong Kong, Macao, and Singapore (so far). More about my travels in Asia. The Ruins of Saint Paul's, Macau. St Paul's Cathedral in Macau was built between 1582 and 1602. Fire swept it in 1835, and all that remains is the façade, the steps leading up to it, and the crypts of Jesuit priests behind it. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Search all of JamesBaquet.com. The Rest of Asia: Places at JamesBaquet.com: Shiva Jnana Dakshinamurti, Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple, Singapore
http://asia.jamesbaquet.com/2009/07/shiva-jnana-dakshinamurti-sri.html
Other Asian locations: Hong Kong, Macao, and Singapore (so far). More about my travels in Asia. Shiva Jnana Dakshinamurti, Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple, Singapore. One of the most attractive things about Singapore was, for us, the Hindu temples. They are rich in iconography, being veritable textbooks of Indian teaching- for those who know how to read them. If I lived in Singapore, I would probably while away the hours in these places, learning the symbolism and the stories behind these figures. To re...

Buddhism Simplified: A Wisdom Blog at JamesBaquet.com: King Bimbasara
http://buddhism.jamesbaquet.com/2009/08/king-bimbasara.html
Brief notes on Buddhist thought and practice. More about these pages. Prince Siddhartha, now a mendicant, turned his steps to the south. He reached the country of Maghada, and the capital city of Rajagaha. Here he continued to beg for alms. When Bimbasara's son returned with news that this extraordinary mendicant was indeed Prince Siddhartha, King Bimbasara was so amazed that he decided to go meet Prince Siddhartha for himself. Bimbasara, thinking this was extraordinary, offered him a place to stay in Bi...

At the Feet of Sri Ramakrishna: A Wisdom Blog at JamesBaquet.com: From a Scrawl to a Fine Hand
http://ramakrishna.jamesbaquet.com/2009/08/from-scrawl-to-fine-hand.html
Finding wisdom for our everyday lives in the words of one of India's greatest saints. More about Sri Ramakrishna. From a Scrawl to a Fine Hand. A boy begins to learn writing by drawing big scrawls, before he can master a finer hand. So we must learn concentration of the mind by fixing it first on forms; and when we have attained success at that, we can more easily fix it upon the formless. At the Feet of Sri Ramakrishna: A Wisdom Blog at JamesBaquet.com: From Big Targets to Small
http://ramakrishna.jamesbaquet.com/2009/08/from-big-targets-to-small.html
Finding wisdom for our everyday lives in the words of one of India's greatest saints. More about Sri Ramakrishna. From Big Targets to Small. A marksman learns to shoot by first taking aim at large objects; the better he gets, the easier it becomes to hit smaller things. So when the mind has been trained to fix on images with form, it becomes easier to fix it upon images having no form. See the notes to " A Bell Rings With and Without Form. Aphorisms of a Derelict Yogi: A Wisdom Blog at JamesBaquet.com: July 2009

Sayings of a modern mystic who was down-on-his-luck. More about the Yogi. If all the other clocks are wrong.". If all the other clocks are wrong, you best be callin' 'Time'". The Yogi said that a lot of people made a hobby of finding fault with others, basically trying to show their superiority and that they were "right" while everybody else was wrong. Calling "Time" would be a reality check. When you hear, "At the tone, the time will be." you can reset your "watch" to the way things really are. People a...
At the Feet of Sri Ramakrishna: A Wisdom Blog at JamesBaquet.com: The Humble Gift
http://ramakrishna.jamesbaquet.com/2009/08/humble-gift.html
Finding wisdom for our everyday lives in the words of one of India's greatest saints. More about Sri Ramakrishna. A landlord may be very rich, but nevertheless, when a poor farmer brings a humble gift to him with a loving heart, he accepts it with the greatest pleasure and satisfaction. Do you remember giving gifts to your mother when you were a child? No matter how ill-made, the gift was praised. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Search all of JamesBaquet.com. Self balancing robot improvements. January 16, 2018. Bull; 2 Comments. Long (tall) version with hard tires. I decided, my first set of motors (Dagu DG02S 48:1) have to low torque on low RPM (driven from DRV8835 H-Bridge again with PWM). The robot was able to stand, but wiggled (video in previous post). So I changed them to JK28HS32 stepper motors, which proved to be even weaker. They simply have to low torque in all RPM range for the weight of my robot. Another disadvantages:. From DFrobot (I found them ...
