A Sojourning Life

December 30, 2015. We finished up our R&R with a visit to Fort Funston - one of our favorite places in San Francisco. Many happy memories there. The dunes along the water are gorgeous - and great to slide down! There are signs about dogs sliding off the cliffs. We had a dog - Moses - who jumped off the cliff - twice! And continued to run along the beach. Links to this post. R&R: Friends in California. We built bonfires on the Carmel Beach and roasted marshmallows and looked at the stars. The log ride - f...

A Sojourning Life: March 2014

http://asojourninglife.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

March 30, 2014. We got out of Manila for a day trip to Corregidor Island. It's an important island at the entrance of Manila Bay - it was fought over during World War II. When General MacArthur said "I shall return", he was referring to Corregidor Island. There's a ferry ride from Manila that lasts a bit over an hour and takes you to the island. There are trams and tour guides that show you the various sites. Many of the buildings and barracks are falling down. There are huge craters where bombs landed.

A Sojourning Life: August 2014

http://asojourninglife.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

August 31, 2014. Manila is a pretty intense urban place. There's not a lot of green space and there's a lot of traffic. And unlike our last post where we could cross the street and be at the beach, in Manila it takes a 2 hours drive or more to get to a beach you can enjoy. So - when our Brazilian friends invited us to check out a somewhat nearby day resort that had volcanic pools, we jumped at the chance. Many trees were down, but it was still quite beautiful. Links to this post. August 30, 2014. In addi...

A Sojourning Life: Baguio

http://asojourninglife.blogspot.com/2014/11/baguio.html

November 29, 2014. When we went on our recent Outreach. To Bagiuo, we were fortunate to stay at the Ambassador's Summer Residence. It's a beautiful place in the mountains around Bagiuo. The air is fresh and cool year round and there are lots of trees. I got to stay in General Yamashita's room - rumor has that it's haunted - although no one came to visit me. The grounds are gorgeous! It was even cool enough to go for a morning run! Something I haven't been able to do in hot and smoggy Manila. Wanderings o...

A Sojourning Life: Outreach

http://asojourninglife.blogspot.com/2014/11/outreach.html

November 29, 2014. One of the primary reasons for having Embassies and Consulates around the world is to provide services for American citizens. Usually the American citizens make the journey to the Embassy or Consulate for services. But - in a country with a significant amount of American citizens living in large communities further away, sometimes the government comes to them in the form of an outreach. I was fortunate to go with a team of colleagues to Baguio for an outreach. The next morning we were ...

A Sojourning Life: Neighborhoods in Manila

http://asojourninglife.blogspot.com/2014/11/neighborhoods-in-manila.html

November 30, 2014. It's always nice to get out and walk around the real neighborhoods. You get to see how real people live. Manila has a lot of traffic, and busy streets. But when you get off the main streets, you can walk through some interesting neighborhoods. There are sidewalk cafes. With outdoor seating and lights in the trees. And even corner religious shrines. And when the neighborhood streets come out of the neighborhood, sometimes they end on a river. There are little corner bakeries. Wanderings...

The Red Menace Abroad: La Purisima

http://theredmenaceabroad.blogspot.com/2012/12/la-purisima.html

The Red Menace Abroad. Saturday, December 8, 2012. At this time last year, we'd only been in Nicaragua about 5 weeks, so I was pretty much brain-dead when it came to participating in any Nica holidays. Not so this year! Thanks to a very good friend, the Mini-Menace and I were invited to celebrate La Purisima. Here is.well, really awful. I'm sorry, but there's just no way around it. No street names, and directions are based on landmarks that may or may not still exist? With no problems at all. After we sa...

The Red Menace Abroad: Happy Independence Day!!

http://theredmenaceabroad.blogspot.com/2012/09/happy-independence-day.html

The Red Menace Abroad. Friday, September 14, 2012. One of the many things I love about living abroad is the fact that the Embassy observes U.S. federal holidays as well as host country holidays. Today is the commemoration of the Battle of San Jacinto, aka Nicaragua's Independence Day. The organizers also arranged for a dance troupe from one of the local high schools to come and present several traditional Nicaraguan dances. The view from the back side of Casa Grande. The back side of Casa Grande. DIPLOMA...

Towels packed, will travel. By towelspacked on August 3, 2015. The thin strip of Moldovan land on the left bank of the Nistru River holds an undeniable fascination for Western visitors, who long to see its still-venerated Soviet symbols with their own eyes. Even the prominent Lenin statue, which stands in front of Tiraspol’s Supreme Soviet building has a counterpart in Chisinau. The same sports director who had greeted D on his previous visit to KVINT. After the tasting, we walked around the center of Ti...

Towels packed, will travel. Too hot to handle. By towelspacked on June 12, 2013. The air, hot and thick like a woolen blanket, enveloped us as soon as we opened the car doors. It may have been close to 8pm, but the temperature at the aptly named Stovepipe Wells hovered close to 100 F. If we had jumped the gun in the Sierra Nevada. A few weeks before the official start of the tourist season, then we were definitely late to the party in Death Valley. Larr; the scenic route to Death Valley. Being a lover of...

Towels packed, will travel. The end of the road. By towelspacked on July 17, 2013. Like all good things, our trip too came to an end. After a full day in Big Sur. We arrived in Santa Cruz just as the sun set. The next day — our last in California — we drove up to San Francisco. S caught up again with Amira. We covered a lot of ground during our three weeks in California:. 14 — The number of national parks. 9,100 feet — Gem Lake. Is the lowest point we visited. Nearly made us wilt. Towels packed, will travel. By towelspacked on July 29, 2015. This summer marks fifteen years since D first picked up a disc and started playing ultimate frisbee, a trajectory that has taken him from his New England college team to pick-up games in Spain and Costa Rica, tournaments throughout East Africa. And most recently the role of field captain for Moldova’s Flying Mamaligas. After an uncompetitive 10-0 victory over Gamble, a recently formed all-female team from Kyiv, the Flying Mamaligas regrouped a...

All Over the World: October 2014

http://david-shelly-heather-damon.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

All Over the World. Friday, October 31, 2014. Am in Lima, Peru for a couple days of meetings. Managed to duck out for an evening stroll in the Miraflores District, and found some delightful venues; all along the Pacific waterfront is an ambling malecon, with fountains, lights, churches and a large 3 story mall. Being such an urban wonk, I am very impressed with the scale and elegance of the oceanfront redevelopment! More photos to come. Happy Halloween from Peru! Where they take Halloween VERY seriously!

SOJOURNEY – the journal

Don’t Forget Who Our Enemy Is. Social media has been buzzing lately with everyone’s thoughts on Syrian Refugees. I’ll admit, I have been getting quite worked up about it as well. How long ago was it that the trendy thing to do was to post a selfie holding a sign with #REFUGEES WELCOME written in bold letters? Well, some of it anyway… the rest are just yelling back. And in the midst of it all, I just want to cry! 8220;HEY CHURCH, DON’T FORGET WHO YOUR ENEMY REALLY IS! Because our enemy is not the church m...

Friday, April 29, 2016. You only see what I want you to see. A perfect sunset, next to this classic landmark, with my best friend. The root of all evil is pride. Man's heart desires nothing short of the inexhaustible pleasure of himself and to give all glory to himself. Selfishly robbing himself of the inexhaustible richness of Gods grace by holding tightly to himself like a child holds on to a candy bar in a store. What Dreams May Come

What Dreams May Come. Wednesday, December 10, 2014. It is very dangerous to end a post with "I'll write within the week," yet I committed that very error the last time I wrote, which was.three months ago. Ha ha! I suppose another apology is in order at the start of this blog post, and this one is meant much more seriously than the one I half-jokingly wrote about waiting almost three months to publish on this blog again. Baltimore's Patterson Park, where Ryan and I had our first brief kiss. And that his m...
