University of Iowa Astronomy and Astrophysics. Department of Physics and Astronomy. Herschel finds merging galaxies. Black holes in M82. RARE MERGER ILLUMINATES ORIGIN OF 'RED AND DEAD’ GALAXIES. Each of the two galaxies has a stellar mass of about 100 billion solar masses, and they each contain roughly the same amount of gas. The astronomers estimated that the merging process would take at most 200 million years to complete, resulting in a massive elliptical galaxy of about 400 billion solar masses.

This is a gallery of recent images taken with the Rigel telescope. The color images are synthesized by combining several filters, typically clear ('luminance'), blue, green, and red. For many images, the red is replaced by a narrowband H alpha filter, and for some, green is replaced with a narrowband oxygen III filter. To see a full-size version of any image, click on the image. Clear Sky Institute was founded in 1993 to undertake the pioneering effort of completely automating a remote observatory at the University of Iowa, which came to be known as the Iowa Robotic Telescope. The principle investigator of that effort was Dr. Robert Mutel. The effort was resoundingly successful, allowing hundreds of students per semester to efficiently utilize one and later two telescopes, one located over 1,000 miles away, in a completely automated fashion.
