astrophotography by bill w: October 2014
http://astrowhw.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Astrophotography by bill w. Direct link to picasa album. Sunday, October 26, 2014. Solar selfie from 10/23/14 eclipse. Why call it a silhouette when i can be trendy? If you look around while the sun is partially eclipsed, you may notice strange things in the shadows: a blurring of the sharp line between light and dark, strange shapes in light. leaves in the trees may create a pinhole camera effect giving projections of the eclipsed sun on the ground. Thursday, October 23, 2014. Here's a section of it:.

Astrophotography by bill w. Direct link to picasa album. Sunday, January 12, 2014. The king is dead, long live the king.comet lovejoy. Another comet of the century turned out to be a bust. But despite comet ISON's demise during it's pass by the sun. There's another comet out. While comet lovejoy is by no means comet of the century. It's one of the best comets i've been able to photograph from light polluted skies:. This one is fairly bright, but low in the sky. So only had a narrow window to image it.

Astrophotography by bill w. Direct link to picasa album. Tuesday, March 17, 2015. M76 in Nitrogen II Oxygen III and Helium II a rainbow in space. What's black and white and red all over? An image using an Ha filter. I chose a M76, a relatively bright planetary nebula with some detail, for the first image with my new narrower Helium II filter (4nm from chroma). A quick blink of the mono channels for this one showed me that the brightest signal areas were not quite completely separated. A rainbow in space:.

Astrophotography by bill w. Direct link to picasa album. Wednesday, August 20, 2014. Leo Galaxy Cluster aka Abell 1367: Part 3 quasars and cosomology. Caught a number of background quasars in the field of Abell 1367. Quasars (quasi-stellar radio sources). Look like faint blue stars. But they have *very* high red-shifts. Which made them somewhat of a mystery. Turns out they are actually extremely distant galaxies. With black holes that are actively feeding on matter. Generating massive amounts of light.

Astrophotography by bill w. Direct link to picasa album. Sunday, April 20, 2014. Caught the eclipse last week. Though looks a bit more easter egg than blood to me. With all the blood moon headlines, today's media is too obsessed with game of thrones me thinks. Though biblical obsession with lunar eclipses around easter/passover abound. We won't mention the 2004 world series :(. First an animation of the event combining images taken at 10 minute intervals:. A close up of the moon during full eclipse:.
astrophotography by bill w: September 2014
http://astrowhw.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Astrophotography by bill w. Direct link to picasa album. Sunday, September 21, 2014. 6th planet from the sun, second largest after jupiter. It has a slight yellowish color due to ammonia in the upper atmosphere. With faint bands (much less dramatic than jupiter's). First view of saturn through a telescope:. Unknowingly, i pointed the scope at a bright "star" rising in the east. And was shocked to see it had rings. A shudder and a concrete sense that there really is more out there than we know. There's so...

Astrophotography by bill w. Direct link to picasa album. Thursday, May 22, 2014. Up up and away. Saw a promising prominence on 5/4/14 and decided to image it:. Here's the animation just over 2 hours imaging once every 5 minutes. A lucky catch as the magnetic field lines holding the hydrogen plasma in place above the sun snapped:. 5/4/2014, newport beach, ca. DMK 51, 2.5x Powermate, Lunt 60 PT B1200, ASA DDM60. Using firecapture now which allowed a sequence. Imaging one minute out of every 5 @ 12fps.

Astrophotography by bill w. Direct link to picasa album. Sunday, January 4, 2015. Speaking of gas giants.Uranus. Uranus has an axial tilt of 98°, so its axis of rotation is approximately parallel with the plane of the Solar System. This gives it bizarre seasonal changes. Combine this extreme tilt with it's 84 year orbit and you get a 21 year "night" at the pole during winter, compared to a 17 hour day at the equator during equinox. The Hubble or flyby space craft can detect faint rings. For visual astron...

Astrophotography by bill w. Direct link to picasa album. Monday, February 17, 2014. Actually, i think best ever for me. It's all about seeing which was above average for a few days. Allowing me to take advantage of a new planetary camera. More details at picasa album). 2/16/14 Europa and shadow with great red spot rotating out of view:. Saturday, February 15, 2014. Jupiter is up for prime viewing this month so here's an overview of the king of planets. A number of significant planetary events have been d...

Astrophotography by bill w. Direct link to picasa album. Monday, July 13, 2015. Pluto is getting a huge amount of press from NASA. Due to the new Horizons probe's closest approach to pluto tomorrow. Latest images can be seen here. Here's pluto back when it was still a planet in July 2006:. Because of it's great distance,. Both visually, and photographically from earth,. Pluto is just another white dot in a field of stars. A recent image by fellow OCastronomers. How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming.
