Astronomoms: January 2010

http://astronomom.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

On being an Astronomer and a Mother. Tuesday, January 19, 2010. Signing back in after a while. Since I last wrote in June, Nr.2 was born, we moved to another country, and I started a new job. Hopefully this will be enough to forgive my silence on this blog! Let's go back to last June where I left this off. I was getting a lot of work done. The summer went well, but flew right by too quickly. I will hopefully have time in the coming weeks to write more about my maternity leave, and about how the fears...

Astronomoms: December 2009

http://astronomom.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

On being an Astronomer and a Mother. Wednesday, December 2, 2009. A Minor Inconvenience of Early Pregnancy. Note: this was written on July 24th 2009, but I've delayed posting until I told all my friends and family about the new baby, since my "annonymity" here is extremely suspect! And in fact this excuse is now a poor one too - what can I say - life happens! Constant mild nausea, increased motion sickness, and vomiting 3-4 mornings every week (for 7 weeks! August 26th Update: I'm just now about 14 weeks...

Astronomoms: June 2009

http://astronomom.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

On being an Astronomer and a Mother. Friday, June 26, 2009. Thank Goodness for Nametags. I made my first attempt at balancing work and motherhood: with Little One at about 6 weeks of age, I attended part of a conference. The most complicated part was timing feedings and arranging childcare while I chaired a session late in the day, when Little One is fussiest. Looking like an Astronomer. And that's a surprise according to him. There was a builder in the kitchen/common room the day I was having my photos ...

Astronomoms: Bedtime story book: Earth to Stella

http://astronomom.blogspot.com/2011/01/bedtime-story-book-earth-to-stella.html

On being an Astronomer and a Mother. Tuesday, January 11, 2011. Bedtime story book: Earth to Stella. Bedtime reading has an important role in our life, and we're frequent visitors to our local library to increase the diversity of the books we read. I'm naturally attracted to kids books about space, and so we read quite a few. Anyway to cut a long story short, I thought it would be nice to review some of them. Right now we're reading "Earth to Stella" by Simon Puttock and Phillip Hopman ( Amazon UK link.

http://visibleuniverse.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 18, 2007. New friends and the leaky pipeline. The Visible Universe has two new friends in the blogosphere: Sorting Out Science. S Sam Wise, who featured The Visible Universe in the 25th edition of the Carnival of Space. Who is a real-life friend as well. Astronomom's brand-new blog chronicles life as post-doc and a new mother. Why start a blog with so much already on her plate? Responding to the FOXNews.com story. On the astronomy job market, she writes:. But as part of astronomy's "lea...

Wednesday, June 18, 2008. In addition to writing for FQXi, I keep myself busy writing the Visible Universe column! Here are a few recent columns:. The Physics of Flying High and Fast. Extreme physics encountered by air travelers every day. Lunar dust more than a cleaner's problem. In which I get revenge on my former landlord for long-ago wrongs. Matter's evil twin, antimatter. Saturday, June 21, 2008. It was back to Pluto this week at the Visible Universe. Poor, sad, spit-upon Pluto. Once a planet, now a . what? the visible universe: Parallel worlds

http://visibleuniverse.blogspot.com/2008/06/parallel-worlds.html

Saturday, June 21, 2008. I've had parallel universes on the brain this week, thanks to a bit of convergence between Job Number 1. And Job Number 2. First, courtesy of Job Number 1, there's the many worlds interpretation. Of quantum mechanics, which suggests that what we call wavefunction collapse. Is, in reality, the branching off of a new universe. Then, over at Job Number 2, there's the "multiverse" advanced by cosmologists like Tufts' Alexander Vilenkin. In the many worlds interpretation, each "advent...

the visible universe: July 2007

Tuesday, July 24, 2007. Brainpower vs. computer power. So what if a computer can play a perfect game of checkers. Humans still have computers beat when it comes to science. Read about it in Friday's column. Posted by Kate Becker. Sunday, July 15, 2007. Harnessed the power of millions of home computers to beat out the data-crunching power of the best supercomputers. daybyday: September 2008

http://daybydayfemalescientist.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Tuesday, September 30, 2008. Often I will come here with the intent to post, and then my mind will suddenly go blank. This is so very odd because my mind is usually SO jammed and packed full of thought fragments (and sometimes full coherent thoughts! That I feel the only way to hear myself think is to SCREAM OUT LOUD. So anyway, I've decided to step over the core dump that I have neatly left on the floor that is my mind, and just write SOMETHING. Anything! I just need to keep writing. I've had, and conti...
