Visitors to the UK. The RAF and RN provide a dedicated Search and Rescue (SAR ) facility. The primary function of SAR is to recover military personnel, though in peacetime the service also responds to civilian emergencies, often working alongside civilian emergency services. There are currently - February 2012 - six RAF SAR and two RN SAR units in the UK. Overseas there is an RAF SAR unit in the Falkland Islands and one in Cyprus.

Visitors to the UK. Although apparently not authorised to fly below 500’ the RAF’s Beech King Air B2000s have been photographed on many occasions well below this height, particularly in mid Wales, and in all types of weather, including a snow storm! Above the cabin windows.

Visitors to the UK. The now retired all-weather Tornado F3 was the fighter derivative of the Tornado GR4 (see previous gallery). The F3 was developed in the late 1970s as the RAF’s then dedicated air defence fighter and was noticeable from the GR4 by its longer fuselage, which enabled it to carry more internal fuel. The F3 also had up-rated engines in order to reach altitude quicker. Which disbanded in March 2011 as yet another result of the UK Government’s. Strategic Defence and Security Review.
