Our Bungalow's 2nd Century. A DIY work in progress. Gaining our footing on a new project. August 29, 2014. Behold our sorry side porch. Almost 20 years later, it’s rotten and unsafe. I wonder how many times it’s been rebuilt over the years. The current porch fits over the planter, but we’re going to take it all out. That will eliminate the “raccoon run” that exists now, under the porch and through the planter. I wish raccoons would stick to eating nuts and berries, and quit stealing pic-a-nic baskets.

(If you missed them, read previous posts about demolition prep. The porch in June. The caps on the posts did go quickly. We assumed our gender-specific roles: Eric cut the wood and screwed it in place, then filled the holes with stinky two-part epoxy filler that dries hard as rock. Click on any photo to enlarge it. Our Bungalow's 2nd Century. A DIY work in progress. Front Porch and Walk. The porch had become spongy and springy, especially toward the edge. In this photo, you can see how the floorboards dip in the center. Yes, that’s asbestos siding. (Most of our neighborhood is covered in it.) Beneath the asbestos are the original cedar shingles, but we didn’t know what shape they’d be in. Talk about curb appeal–don’t these steps just shout “welcome”? I was poised to dial 911 if the porch fell on either of them....
