Random thoughts on the power of words, Buddhist practice, and the changing of the seasons in the Santa Fe River region of North Central Florida. Sunday, July 22, 2012. The Fountains of Youth Tarot: Card 0, The Fool—Ponce de Leon. Anybody who would go exploring in Florida dressed like that. Has got to have a strong foolish streak! But in the tarot, you have to do more than dress funny to get labeled as The Fool. We see this foolishness everywhere—in the elevation of big business and big agriculture ...

Random thoughts on the power of words, Buddhist practice, and the changing of the seasons in the Santa Fe River region of North Central Florida. Wednesday, October 12, 2011. As I get closer, my focus shifts and I notice what looks like a mammoth, black, hairy human foot dangling off the passenger’s side of the truck. “What the heck! 8221; I mutter, doing a double take as my car’s speed increases and I draw even with the truck bed. 8220;Oh, shit! 8221; I exclaim to myself. “Damn! What were his bear though...

A Word Witch: How to Kill a River and Its Springs: A Textbook Case

http://awordwitch.blogspot.com/2014/06/how-to-kill-river-and-its-springs.html

Random thoughts on the power of words, Buddhist practice, and the changing of the seasons in the Santa Fe River region of North Central Florida. Friday, June 27, 2014. How to Kill a River and Its Springs: A Textbook Case. Ignore the part of your state’s constitution that mandates preservation and protection of its natural resources. Wait 42 years before trying to determine how much water the river and springs actually need to stay healthy. In fact, never. Tell big permit holders that they are going to ha...

A Word Witch: September 2011

http://awordwitch.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Random thoughts on the power of words, Buddhist practice, and the changing of the seasons in the Santa Fe River region of North Central Florida. Thursday, September 29, 2011. School didn’t start, then, until after Labor Day—probably because it was so hot before then that our brains refused to work in un-air conditioned classrooms, and no teacher in his or her right mind wanted to deal with sweaty, unfocused teenagers with greasy faces who stank of sticky 6-12 gnat repellent and raging hormones. Back then...

Desolation Florida: February 2016

http://www.desolationflorida.com/2016_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 28, 2016. What desolation lurks near you? The following photos were all taken within walking distance of my home. I had driven past two of these structures twice daily for nearly a good six months before the fall season thinned the woods enough for them to become visible. Look closely! Can you see the remains of the house? Meanwhile, this one sits directly behind a local shopping center:. What desolation lurks near you? Saturday, February 20, 2016. I may have uttered some words quite ina...

Sauntering Through the State of Dreams. March 17, 2011. In Loving Memory: Zona Beckwith March 17, 1925-March 2, 2011. I lived in that home for 15 years, and after I sold it four years ago, I too moved into “town”. Zona had seemed touched that I had included her in the “Sprawl” book. But in reality, it was I who was deeply moved—and honored— for having known her at all. Excerpted from “Losing it All to Sprawl: How Progress Ate my Cracker Landscape” :. Tall pines, which looked like long leafs, towered in t...

Desolation Florida: Dowling Park

http://www.desolationflorida.com/2017/01/dowling-park.html

Saturday, January 7, 2017. You’ll be over the Suwannee and into Lafayette County before you know it. However, if you look to the south while you’re crossing the Suwannee River, you’ll get a glimpse of Dowling Park’s past: an old railroad trestle, crossing the Suwannee. Dowling Park Lumber Company, early 1900s [ source. In addition to serving as the community surrounding the sawmill, Thomas Dowling hoped that his Dowling Park would become a popular vacation resort area. As such, in the early 1900s, he...

Sunday, June 19, 2016. Luraville and Peacock Springs. Luraville, FL of today is little more than a crossroads with a flashing light, roughly twenty miles southwest of Live Oak, FL in the north Florida county of Suwannee, just north of the Suwannee River. Desolation Florida: The Dixie Mainline and Shired Island

http://www.desolationflorida.com/2016/10/the-dixie-mainline-and-shired-island.html

Saturday, October 29, 2016. The Dixie Mainline and Shired Island. The following three photographs are from the State of Florida Archives. They are labeled as logging from this time period in Dixie County, although whether or not they are from the Dixie Mainline is unknown. However, this should give you a good idea of how the logging operations in the area at that time looked. All three photos are from the 1920s. Much of the Dixie Mainline looks like this. The rather rocky "canoe launch" at Sanders Creek.

Desolation Florida: December 2016

http://www.desolationflorida.com/2016_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, December 28, 2016. Lee: Little but Proud. The tiny community of Lee is located in eastern Madison County, between the towns of Madison to the west and Live Oak to the east. I’ve had a hard time finding much information about the history of the small town, but judging from the number of photographs I was able to find in the Florida Archive, it was once much bigger than it is today. Here’s what I was able to learn:. First sawmill in Lee, 1890s. JE Whitty and Son Drugstore,1918 (store built 1910).

A Word with Kitty

A Word with Kitty. Today’s Word: Pursuit. That idea is nothing but a DREAM! Have you ever been told that? The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and. Enjoy life, and have it in abundance. To the full, till it overflows]. If we are going to pursue and succeed at anything, then we need to get rid of our Steamrollers: the naysayers, the ones that say you can’t do that thing, your dream is to big, OR you are crazy for trying that! Negativity kills, so rid it!
