I don’t quite know how I ended up scrambling up a 30m rocky outcrop without shoes, wearing a skirt, at 5:30am in the morning, wondering how the hell I was going to get down again, but I did. I do, however, know why I ended up with a black piece of volcanic rock the size of a 100-and-1000 (a sphere of that multi-coloured sugary stuff used to make fairy bread) embedded in the sole of my left foot.
