Backyard Farming

Friday, September 30, 2016. A different game of squash. Q: What do you do when summer squash morphs from tenderly edible and cute to a rock-hard, warty weapon? Oftentimes before you or your *harvest crew ever spy it in the garden! A: You unleash your own weapons of mass destruction (aka: your boys) to break the squash into compost-able smithereens. Really, Mom, you WANT us to hit the squash? Tell the boys they need to rake the spoils so you can measure who has the biggest pile. Mom for the victory! To ma...

Backyard Farming: August 2013

http://backyardfarming.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 15, 2013. Cool as a Lemon Cucumber. Cucumbers seem to be one of those vegetables that always do well for us. In the past we have grown many varieties with success. This year we might have found a new front runner for coolest cucumber in the garden. Lemon cucumbers with crookneck squash. They are very prolific. I think we are getting more cucumbers from the lemon cucumber than the double yield. Our kids like to eat them like apples so they are eating more of them. Links to this post.

Backyard Farming: Second Chance for that Pumpkin

http://backyardfarming.blogspot.com/2014/11/second-chance-for-that-pumpkin.html

Tuesday, November 4, 2014. Second Chance for that Pumpkin. Don't forget to give that sad pumpkin a second chance in your compost bin! Every year, we place ours in the backyard so that we can watch it decompose. My lil guy suggested using time-lapse photography on it this year! November 5, 2014 at 3:08 AM. Glad to see you back posting again. Have a great day in the garden. November 5, 2014 at 6:18 AM. Daisy G, that would be a really cool project! If you ever do it, I would love to see it.

Backyard Farming: Backyard Chickens 101: Part One

http://backyardfarming.blogspot.com/2009/02/backyard-chickens-101-part-one.html

Wednesday, February 25, 2009. Backyard Chickens 101: Part One. Since it's spring time and many of us will be getting new chickens we felt like it was time for a chicken 101. First off, are they noisy? I imagined keeping chickens would be something akin to the geese at the park and that there was no way my neighbors wouldn't complain. I was surprised to find that with the exception of the roosters(male chickens) these birds are pretty quiet. Definitely quieter than my neighbor's dogs! What about the smell?

Adventures in Homesteading: Contentment in Frugal Living

http://dicefamilyhomesteading.blogspot.com/2012/01/contentment-in-frugal-living.html

Sunday, January 8, 2012. Contentment in Frugal Living. It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, who is poor." Lucius Annaeus Seneca. I am on a quest to live a frugal, self-sufficient lifestyle. I'm tired of living the rat-race life. I'm tired of the rampant materialism and consumerism and the discontentment that we, as Americans, are known for. Laurence Shames, in The Hunger for More. I'm taking part in the 23 Day Frugal Living Challenge. The answer is that we have too much.

Thursday, March 11, 2010. Well, the workshop was last weekend and we had an AMAZING time - pictures to come soon. We were really impressed with the group and how quickly they caught on and how much they improved in one day. We knew it would work! You can see their pictures from the day at the Joyography Facebook Page. As well as their thoughts. AND we have been overwhelmed by questions about when the next workshop is going to be so we are ready to announce it! Glad that it was such a success;).

Tuesday, April 14, 2009. Aprils Homeschool Field trip. Our April field trip was a tour of the capitol building. I wasn't really that excited about this one, especially since our last field trip. Was so much fun. But, if you haven't ever taken a tour, I would recommend that you take one. It was very interesting for me as well as the kids. The House of Representatives:. Did you know that for the state of Utah, they are only in session for 45 days? The architecture and paintings were just beautiful!

Monday, June 29, 2009. In about 2 weeks everything is going to come to a screeching halt for a while. I'm trying to cram in all the fun summer activities possible before the baby comes. The Utah Symphony is putting on an outside concert tomorrow night, we may be going to that. Wednesday, June 24, 2009. Come on, we all have them. Now, you can laugh at the expense of others awkward family photos. Michael and I laughed for about an hour straight going through the site. Go check it out. Maya and Mason were b...

http://whimsicalconcoctions.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 31, 2010. So Long, Farewell. Alberta, say adeu. That's how the song goes, right? It is time to say good-bye, ciao, Sayonara, Au Revoir, Adios to Life's Sweet Surprises. I have been debating whether to keep this blog going for a while, since it has been badly neglected. With facebook and my backyard farming blog, I no longer have a need for this blog. I will be posting about our endeavors to eat healthier, live more frugally, and our efforts to expand our backyard farm. Well, the workshop...

Daydreams of a Cowgirl: March 2013

http://teekaroo.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Easter Eggs and the Koolaid Dye. I have to admit, I've been a bit Scrooge-like in my approach to Easter this year. Or maybe it just snuck up on me. What is it doing in March, anyway? I had the genius idea to hit a few community egg hunts this morning and nearly died of an anxiety attack. Why does the women who avoids highly congested areas walk willingly into a place that the entire valley is converging on? Did I really expect my kids to get any treats, with every child in a 50 mile radius there too?
