The Karoo
http://www.barbaramutch.com/index_files/Page869.htm
The Karoo is an ancient land of ironstone rock and stunted scrub, baking in summer, freezing in winter, parched all year round. But it wasn’t always so. About 250 million years ago, the Karoo was buried beneath a vast inland sea. Since that time, the waters have receded and the earth has gone through many geological upheavals until today we find a world that is both arid and dramatic. Visit the magnificent Mountain Zebra National Park. Inspiration for the book. The Town of Cradock. Media - Radio / Video.

The Town of Cradock
http://www.barbaramutch.com/index_files/Page483.htm
Cradock was founded in 1812 on a stretch of the Great Fish River, before it curves down from the dry plains of the Karoo towards the sea. At first it was a military town, a frontier town, but these days it is the hub of an active farming community and a burgeoning urban centre. Signs of its colonial past can still be seen in the buildings that ring Market Square: the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the style of St Martins-in-the-Fields in London, the Town Hall, and the Victoria Hotel. The Town of Cradock.

The music that inspires Ada in The Housemaid’s Daughter is the Prelude no 15, by Chopin. Composed in the winter of 1838/39 when Chopin was in his late twenties, it is an extraordinarily beautiful piece. It opens with a deceptively simple melody that deepens to a stormy, complex heart before returning to the original theme. The repeating A-flat that echoes throughout has always reminded listeners of falling raindrops - hence the popular name ‘Raindrop’ Prelude. Inspiration for the book. The Town of Cradock.
Karoo Plainsong
http://www.barbaramutch.com/index_files/Page380.htm
Duty and love collide in a remote town on the arid plains of central South Africa. Cathleen Harrington leaves Ireland in 1919 to travel to South Africa and marry the fiancé she has not seen for 5 years. Isolated and estranged, she finds solace in the friendship of her housemaid’s daughter, Ada. Under Cathleen’s teaching, Ada grows into an accomplished pianist, and a reader who cannot resist turning the pages of Cathleen’s diary, discovering the secrets she sought to hide. Inspiration for the book.

Barbara Mutch's stunning first novel tells a story of love and duty colliding on the arid plains of Apartheid-era South Africa. Set against the backdrop of a beautiful, yet divided land, The Housemaid's Daughter. Is a startling and thought-provoking novel that intricately portrays the drama and heartbreak of two women who rise above cruelty to find love, hope, and redemption. Brisbane Journey: November 2010

Monday, November 29, 2010. Story of Love, Loss and Redemption Set in the Karoo. Been sent some information about a newly published book called Karoo Plainsong. Which is written by Barbara Mutch, who lived in South Africa for almost 40 years until she moved to the United Kingdom. It sounds like a great read. Forced to flee from the only home she knows, Ada must carve a life for herself, her daughter and her music in the bleak township that squats on the edge of the Karoo. The personal tale of a woman̵...

Publishing my First Book: Writing a "first person" novel
http://barbaramutch.blogspot.com/2015/02/writing-first-person-novel.html
Publishing my First Book. Friday, 13 February 2015. Writing a "first person" novel. When setting out to write a novel, how do you decide whether to write it as an " I. Or as "he said, she said"? I first began The Housemaid's Daughter. I got about ten percent of the way through, and knew it wasn't working. Too detached. Too prissy. I was champing at the bit to reveal more of Ada's character than my sedate third-person style was allowing. It was time for a re-think. Strangely, despite my nervousness, the m...

Publishing my First Book. Friday, 27 February 2015. Pioneering days from The Housemaid's Daughter. I am just about to head off on a hiking trail through the Cape fynbos. And it struck me that what for me will be pleasure, surely was quite daunting for my family when they arrived in South Africa over a hundred years ago. They didn't have the gentle delights of lush mountains and fynbos to ease them into their new country, but rather the stark challenge of the Karoo. Would we be as brave? For more about th...

Publishing my First Book. Friday, 13 March 2015. Welcome. A Cor do Coracao! The Portuguese version of The Housemaid's Daughter. My Portuguese publisher hasn't yet sent me my copies, so I can't do my usual check. How weighty is it, physically? A mighty tome like the Icelandic version, or a disconcertingly slim volume as in the Chinese translation (what did they leave out? For example, springs to mind. All that aside, it definitely looks like my book! I think it's positive, don't you? The Housemaid's Daugh...

Publishing my First Book. Tuesday, 5 May 2015. The Housemaid's Daughter. by another name. I have a very creative member of my family who decided to make a mosaic of the foreign translations of The Housemaid's Daughter. Publishing my First Book: Plot or Characters - Which comes first?
http://barbaramutch.blogspot.com/2015/01/plot-or-characters-which-comes-first.html
Publishing my First Book. Friday, 30 January 2015. Plot or Characters - Which comes first? That's the eternal question for new authors: Must I know the plot before I people it? Or should I nail down the characters first? Some writers say it's only possible to develop characters if you already know the story they're about to enliven. After all, without knowing the action, how can you imagine the players who will navigate through it? A healthy input, surely? In writing The Housemaid's Daughter. Some elemen...
