A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard: Once More into the Marsh
http://yankinyard.blogspot.com/2014/06/once-more-into-marsh.html
A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard. Monday, June 30, 2014. Once More into the Marsh. Our original plan for yesterday had been to go into DC and visit the Native American History Museum. Then I saw a calendar that reminded me that the Folk Life Festival was taking place this past weekend and next weekend. Traffic, crowds, parking issues, crowds. So we decided on a Plan B, which was yet another fresh water marsh, this one in Fairfax County: Huntley Meadows Park. ON GOING TO CHURCH AND NOT.

A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard: July 2014
http://yankinyard.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard. Sunday, July 20, 2014. Up, Up and Away! Home there when I was growing up there. I also remember reading Anne Morrow Lindbergh's diaries while I was in high school. It tries to dispel the romantic images that make up our current cultural memory of World War I. The reality was a far cry from Snoopy and the Red Baron! It could be a spider," the boy said. Absolutely perfect. One entire floor of the museum was closed for renovation, and the exhibits a...I'm n...

Ramblings With Lois: June 2013
http://ramblingswithlois.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, June 20, 2013. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I'm never reading only one book at a time. Right now, along with the book about ancestral homes known to Virginia Woolf, I am reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. By Robert M. Pirsig. It's subtitle is An Inquiry into Values. It's listed in Wikipedia as a 1974 philosophical novel in which Pirsig "explores his Metaphysics of Quality". My late mother-in-law read it in the '90's. I never did read it, until now. I know I have ex...

Ramblings With Lois: August 2012
http://ramblingswithlois.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, August 28, 2012. Even in the still-dark before dawn I could see the creek was full. We must have had an awful lot of rain last night, and we all slept through it. The creek is full, for now, which means that the Montour waterfall will be running, at least for today. And all the little falls along the roadway. Links to this post. Friday, August 24, 2012. I'm standing on the deck, watching the creek behind the house shrink day by day. Now, every morning, the dry line on the opposite "shore" (a cre...

Ramblings With Lois: September 2012

Saturday, September 29, 2012. UPDATE: Michael Schumacher will retire - again. Not a stellar season this year, but he's a real pro, and a great driver. Well, Lewis Hamilton is leaving McLaren. Next year he will drive for Mercedes. Michael Schumacher will leave Mercedes and so far we don't know what he will be doing. Perez will become McLaren's second driver, to Jensen Button. Now I'll know whether my loyalty is to Lewis, or to the McLaren mark. Links to this post. Friday, September 28, 2012. And we had in...

Ramblings With Lois: May 2012
http://ramblingswithlois.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, May 31, 2012. Eventually, the circuits of the labyrinth take me back to where I can see the man in the park again. He's sorting through things in the bag. It's not recycling pick-up day, when the gleaners come out early in the morning and pick out all the recyclables for which they can get money in return. Work is work. He's been up early to go to work, picking, collecting, and now sorting. For how much, I wonder? Links to this post. Tuesday, May 22, 2012. Spring in the City Wilderness. When I ...

Ramblings With Lois: October 2012
http://ramblingswithlois.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Saturday, October 27, 2012. My niece, Kirsten Thien. Has been on tour in Europe for it seems like months now. This weekend she has been in Saltburn on the Sea, in the UK. It's between York to the south and Newcastle on Tyne to the north. Here's a link to the map. My mom wanted me to become a famous opera singer. All I want to do is to chant the Exsultet at the Easter Vigil in church. My dream has come true. And my mom's dream? Links to this post. Thursday, October 25, 2012. Links to this post. For even t...

Ramblings With Lois: The Visitor
http://ramblingswithlois.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-visitor.html
Saturday, January 12, 2013. Well, Mako the pitbull/lab mix is here for his second weekend visit in a row since the long Thanksgiving holiday. I have video of how the two are getting along in the same house, which Xena, Warrior Labmix Princess of Norwalk, owns. Here's the first one. Xena is on the bed. Mako is on her dog bed on the floor. There's a second one to come later. Mako is here until Monday morning. So, so far a good weekend. Tomorrow: the annual presentation of the budget approved by the Ves...

A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard: April 2014
http://yankinyard.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
A Connecticut Yankee in Robert E. Lee's Back Yard. Friday, April 25, 2014. Packing, Prepping, and More Packing. The last bit of laundry is in the washer, and as soon as it comes out of the dryer I will take it and the stuff strewn on my bed and finish packing. Four bags already sit in the hallway ready to go. I've said before that I can travel for two weeks in Ireland with a carry-on, but three days of Dance Camp. Tuesday, April 22, 2014. The Changing Nature of Filing. I first signed up for Evernote to t...
