Left Edinburgh to drive to Mallaig. We left a little earlier than last year, to avoid rallying down the A830 to get the ferry on time. Arrived in Mallaig in plenty of time for the ferry. Went to a pub to watch Ingerland cuff Denmark. 1600 Arrived at pier in Armadale. Mild chaos at Sleat Marine Services - 3 crews trying to unload their gear from cars at once, non of the boats ready, and Charmian from SMS wandering round being polite to everyone. Arrived at Ardfern to pick up Sigma 33. Shown round boat by owner and pretended to understand all the gadgets and widgets. Loaded boat with food and drink for expedition (48 cans of beer and a box of cornflakes) - no more room in lockers for kit, so dry clothes rolled around in bilges for next week. Went to pub to discuss plans for expedition. Derek had first drink for 5 months. Derek then had second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth drink. Left pub without paying for meal. Roundabout and crew in Ardfern.

A Moody 38 centre-cockpit caravan, and motored down Loch Craignish in W 8kn. For a change, everything on the boat seemed to work, so despite the looming clouds, we set off in good spirits. After years of chartering from Ardfern, we had decided to try somewhere different (well we were bored of Tobermory), so this year we were chartering an Oyster 39 ketch from Sleat Marine Services at Armadale on Skye. Crew met up for the traditional food shopping in Morrison s in Fort William what a good idea to buy a week's supplies in an over-crowded provincial supermarket on a Saturday lunchtime. In fact not so bad thanks to Quartermaster Desmond's precision planning. Crew had the traditional fish and chips at the Lochailort Hotel (Findus had the exotic, expensive version.). Ferry to Armadale, watching the big lumpy waves and thinking how nice it will be in a small yacht. Mark and Charmian were there to greet us.
