Daily news and views from a postdoctoral fellow in Cell Biology. Monday, February 27, 2006. The Picture of a Happy Scientist! So my blog's been suffering from neglect. (I'm writing up a paper.). Hopefully it'll get in some journal, then I'll be a happy scientist! Speaking of happy scientist, check this photo out (to the right). And why is he happy? He not only just published a paper but is on front page. Of Harvard's website. Check out the Harvard article. What a golden moment! Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Daily news and views from a postdoctoral fellow in Cell Biology. Friday, February 24, 2006. While reading, Keat's Telescope. I read an interesting entry on Mimivirus. I've been reading a bit on this weird creature. Last year its genome was sequenced ( see the Science article. To read more, check out the March edition of Discover Magazine. Bartholomew Cubbins on Science: January 2006
http://bcubbinsscience.blogspot.com/2006_01_01_archive.html
Bartholomew Cubbins on Science. A discussion of hot topics in biomedical science. I hope that the level of detail will interest the average scientist, yet the format will allow non-scientists to enjoy the discussion as well. While a bit of gossip and trade talk will get tossed in for good measure, I intend the majority of the discussion to be focussed on the analysis of the data. Thursday, January 12, 2006. What is the worst PI/lab head situation to find yourself? The overly amorous PI. A quick rundown o...

Bartholomew Cubbins on Autism: June 2005
http://bartholomewcubbins.blogspot.com/2005_06_01_archive.html
Bartholomew Cubbins on Autism. As a scientist and a parent of a child on the spectrum, I wear many hats thoughout the day. I believe the pursuit of understanding the roots of autism and other neurological disorders affecting children to be one of the most important things one might do with their professional and free time. Comments and debate are welcome, abuse is not. Wednesday, June 29, 2005. Or is it just crazy? Is she in the clear, or could she be a carrier of the autism mutation(s)? At what point do...

The Daily Transcript: Scientists Taking Holidays?
http://ribonucleicacids.blogspot.com/2006/02/scientists-taking-holidays.html
Daily news and views from a postdoctoral fellow in Cell Biology. Monday, February 20, 2006. Yes it's President's Day. But does that stop the lab from filling up? If you are concerned that Holidays may slow down the pace of Science, fear not, Scientists have lost the ability to take time off! Or perhaps to identify major holidays/weekends). This fact was seared into my brain last night. I had to stop by the lab to poly-adenylate some RNA I needed for an experiment. Not a desperate postdoc.

The Daily Transcript: Bimolecular Fluorescence Complementation
http://ribonucleicacids.blogspot.com/2006/02/bimolecular-fluorescence.html
Daily news and views from a postdoctoral fellow in Cell Biology. Thursday, February 16, 2006. Just read an article in the last issue of JCB, where the authors used a nifty new technique to investigate when and where certain RNA binding factors associate together. In the past researchers used a related technique called FRET. If the two proteins came close enough, when excited, fluorophore A can donate (or transfer) it's energy to fluorophore B. Stimulate A, measure B. Here is image 1 from the paper descri...
