Thursday, May 19, 2011. Vappu is a celebration to welcome spring. Traditional in many northern European countries, it's called May Day in many places and is also called Walpurgis Night. In Finland, it's celebrated with wild parties and parades, especially in the bigger cities. There used to be more emphasis on speeches by workers, politicians and clergy. Now, it seems to be more about letting loose and having fun. One of the day's street performers. He and danced, played the pan flute and sold CD's.

Monday, April 25, 2011. Turning Twelve in Tampere. Whipped cream and strawberries on cake - yum. It was store-bought, but it was a tasty birthday cake, nonetheless. Brooke with her birthday loot! Pretty necklace from grandparents Denny and Becky, on a pretty gal. Brooke's request for a birthday dinner: bacon, mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli and fruit salad. I added a homemade fruit punch, and we were set. Note the multiple colors of nail polish, a b-day present from Grandma Susan and Grandpa Grant.

It is fairly common in Finland for people to own or rent cabins in the countryside. Called mökki. I've never been to a cabin without at least one sauna, and it's not uncommon for their to be an electric sauna in the main cabin and a wood-burning, free-standing sauna closer to the lake. Sunday, June 27, 2010. Late Spring and Summer! While the girls were at camp, Bryan and I packed things in the house, took long walks, and on their last day, we headed to Sheboygan, Wisconsin. We had brat sandwiches and delicious but too-big malts (are you asking, "what's too big for a malt? Now it's time to dig in and get ready for Finland.
