Hurrying to go to better things. | A Bit of Behavioral Ecology

A Bit of Behavioral Ecology. Ruminations on the evolution and ecology of animal behaviour. Hurrying to go to better things. Over at Why Evolution is True. Jerry Coyne addresses an article by Andrew Riggio. Wooooooow. Bitter much? Should we be grateful to God for asking 6 million Jews to join Him during the Holocaust? Seeing this reminded me of something I read a while ago in John Aberth’s great book. Plagues in World History. But what should we say? And if Christ our king now summons us to see him, why d...

Do you know this bird? | A Bit of Behavioral Ecology

https://behavecology.wordpress.com/2012/04/16/do-you-know-this-bird

A Bit of Behavioral Ecology. Ruminations on the evolution and ecology of animal behaviour. Do you know this bird? Google has failed me (even the reverse image search, which failed rather spectacularly), and since it worked so well last time. I thought I’d ask the readers once again: any idea what species this bird hails from? A prize will be given for the first correct answer*. The prize is a lie. There is no prize. Pete chimes in below with what I think is the correct answer: the Rose-ringed Parakeet.

A Bit of Behavioral Ecology. Ruminations on the evolution and ecology of animal behaviour. Now that we’ve found Nemo, it’s time to save his friends. Picture by Peter E. Lee, used under a CC license. There’s many things that we don’t know about the ocean, and most people won’t find that too surprising, but what might be surprising is the. Of our ignorance in some areas. This is the subject of a recent paper by McClenachan et al. in the journal. Here we see that many species, especially in the invertebrate...

Spider people, leave me a comment if you know anything about this spectacular individual, found in Sydney while I was walking to lunch:. Captured with my iPhone 4S. Looks like a Golden Orb Weaver. Who’s the cleverest in the land: let the battle begin! | What Behaviour

https://whatbehaviour.wordpress.com/2011/06/12/whos-the-cleverest-in-the-land-let-the-battle-begin

Behavioural Ecology and all things related. Who’s the cleverest in the land: let the battle begin! 12 June, 2011. So this time I have two articles to talk about. Hope it makes up for the lack of post last week. I was a bad girl, I know. First up are the bird brains. The following article pits New Caledonian crows. Parrots are ok too, I guess). They are given the same task, which is basically a puzzle with four different solutions and food as reward. Video of keas and crows solving puzzles. In the Floatin...

How did I end up here? | What Behaviour

https://whatbehaviour.wordpress.com/2011/06/20/how-did-i-end-up-here

Behavioural Ecology and all things related. How did I end up here? 20 June, 2011. Tags: 2nd year blues. I remember way back in the late nineties (when I was in my teens) how I wanted to become a vet. I was fascinated with animal behaviour and I was hoping to be a vet with a sideline in behaviour counselling. Instead, a few years later, I ended up doing a degree in animal behaviour and welfare. Doing that degree was a dream. There was just enough of a taste of academia. Then I went and worked in Uzbekistan.

*Clears dust and cobwebs* | What Behaviour

https://whatbehaviour.wordpress.com/2012/09/12/clears-dust-and-cobwebs

Behavioural Ecology and all things related. Clears dust and cobwebs*. 12 September, 2012. Yeah, didn’t think so. As my time of writing up is upon me, I feel this blog will become a very important procrastination tool. This may mean one of two things: 1) No more posts as I simply can’t summon the energy 2) Lots of posts with very variable quality. I may also decide to blog about all sorts of non-biological things. Or things that are biological but from a thoroughly unacademic angle. Both of these experime...

Joys of fieldwork | What Behaviour

https://whatbehaviour.wordpress.com/2011/10/02/joys-of-fieldwork

Behavioural Ecology and all things related. 2 October, 2011. Image via Wikipedia: Yes, this was one of my field sites. So I’ve been away for a while. Malarkey is busy work – who would have thought it? The “away” that I’ve been at is the Faroe Islands. Now fieldwork. As you may have noticed, I work mainly with sticklebacks. Where I cruelly feed them bloodworm ( Chironomid. To see how they forage. Apparently they like bloodworm (Chironomid larvae. Annoying yet? I set up a survival experiment where I made (...

Why acting in football is so common | What Behaviour

https://whatbehaviour.wordpress.com/2011/10/09/why-acting-in-football-is-so-common

Behavioural Ecology and all things related. Why acting in football is so common. 9 October, 2011. Tags: animal signalling theory. Don’t worry, this hasn’t turned into a sports blog. However, this little study on PLoS. ONE was too good to let pass. They studied football (the British type, what some people might refer to as soccer) and how the players feign being tackled. Their study was about deception and when deception is adaptive – or to put it plainly, when it pays to cheat. Which is usually tested in...

ISBE: The International Society for Behavioural Ecology

ISBE: The International Society for Behavioural Ecology. Welcome to the International Society. Behavioral ecology is the study of the fitness consequences of behavior. Research in this field poses the basic question: what does an animal gain, in fitness terms, by doing this rather than that? It combines the study of animal behavior with evolutionary biology and population ecology, and more recently, physiology and molecular biology. Adaptation is the central unifying concept. Our journal publishes high q...
