A Fresh Look at Old Libya. Recently, National Geographic featured Libyan archaeology on its cover. The article is titled Unseen Libya: reclaiming its Forgotten Past. To the non-archaeology junkie, the question begs a few obvious questions. First, what forgotten past? Libya certainly doesn’t conjure up images of past glories, but maybe it should: some of the largest and most successful Greek and Roman cities were located in Libya. Leptis Magna. The World’s Greatest Deliberative Body? Would someone as ambitious and dedicated as former Sen. Snowe vacate a seat they had held for nearly two decades if they weren’t done with their work? As many political theorists and writers have argued, the proliferation of social media and information technology has empowered the public sphere and improved the toolkit to those outside of elected office who still want to shape the debate. This is an interesting take, and one that I think has a lot of validity.
