Today we sought out foraminifera in our core samples, (translation: little-bitty marine fossils) to try and help us determine the microscopic marine environment of the time the core sediment was being deposited on the ocean floor:. These are actually "forams" from slides I made YESTERDAY (using a different technique than today's) but I finally got to look at them tonight (took pictures, too). Beth on the JR. Friday, April 5, 2013. Found a picture I hadn't shared yet. I'm working my way through my pictures and found this one from Tuesday:. We were on the core deck and we each had an opportunity to cut the core barrel. Not exactly the same as when the barrel is full of actual core but still gave a feel for the process and now I have a barrel that I can fill with faux core material for the students to observe. Beth on the JR. Thursday, April 4, 2013. First view of my stateroom. My first up-close look at the drilling derrick from "steel beach" on April 1. Steel beach is the upper-most level of the ship and is completely open to the air. Yes, there were a couple of deck chairs up there and yes, there was nothing but steel underfoot. From the drilling floor looking up at the derrick from right about where the drill pipe goes through to the ocean floor. VERY COOL! Posted by SEA SCHOLARS.

Here we are swirling our samples in water to make the clay-like core material into a slurry:. No, we're not mixing drinks! We're in a lab; my students would tell you no eating or drinking in the lab! We've just finished the unit on physical properties and, YES, scientists REALLY use physical properties to describe their samples! This is the science teacher version of "Yes, Virginia, there IS a Santa Claus! OK, yes, that was geek speak and very few of you need to care about that but it was exciting for me! I want one for my school!
