Lectures: Blog Synthesis | Science of Education
https://bethseducationblog.wordpress.com/2013/04/15/lectures-blog-synthesis
For the past couple of weeks I have been talking about lectures and some of the advantages and disadvantages of this format. This week I’ll be going over what I have found during my time researching this and what I now feel we should be working towards. Allport, D. A. (1980). Attention and performance. Cognitive psychology: New directions. London: Routledge and Kegan Paul. Groups, leadership and men. Pittsburgh, PA: Carnegie Press. Research in Higher Education, 47. Linnenbrink, E. The Testing Effect and Education | Science of Education
https://bethseducationblog.wordpress.com/2013/02/04/the-testing-effect-and-education
The Testing Effect and Education. Since this is the first blog I thought it best to talk about something quite general: the testing effect. Most people have heard about it somewhere along the road and some will come across it during third year dissertations if doing some form of written test. It establishes that the way we are assessed affects our learning, so should we be considering changing the way we are taught and assessed. Do we go to schools to gain knowledge or for training into how to pass exams?
February | 2013 | Science of Education
https://bethseducationblog.wordpress.com/2013/02
Monthly Archives: February 2013. Are lectures a good idea? In the next few weeks I have decided to look into a topic that has a lot of relevance to us as studentslectures. A lot of the learning we will do at university will be through lectures, however, we have also been a part of oral presentation, independent work, group work, and other different forms of teaching. With all these other ways of learning why do we continue with lectures? Benware, C. A., and Deci, E. L. (1984). Quality...Carney, R. N&...

Should Reinforcement happen in Schools? In psychology on of the first this we usually learn about is conditioning and reinforcement. We know that this is often applied in many areas of life, but should it be applied in schools? Barrish, H. H., Sanders, M., and Wolf, M. M. (1969). Due to mentioning that test anxiety affects our performance in tests I got to thinking about test anxiety. What is test anxiety, why is it a problem and what can we do about it? Cassady, J.C. (2010). Grades are Up | Science of Learning 2013
https://sciol13.wordpress.com/2013/03/19/grades-are-up
Science of Learning 2013. Science of Education Coordinating Blog 2013. Your grades are finally up. Good job. I have really enjoyed your blogs this week, and I’m not going to mention the ones I thought were great, because the list is getting too long. There is one that I will mention however, more because of the discussion and thinking behind that than anything (the blog was great as well). That is Sarah’s blog. That said, looking forward to Thursday, and then the Easter break! March 19, 2013. You are com...
Final Blog (except for your reflection) | Science of Learning 2013

Science of Learning 2013. Science of Education Coordinating Blog 2013. Final Blog (except for your reflection). I can’t believe it is over again. Good job. There were some great syntheses, however, there were far too many lists of what you had covered in your previous blogs. A synthesis needs to highlight what has emerged in your thinking as a result of having done all this research. For too many of the blogs, it was just a recap of what had already been covered. March 19, 2013. It has been suggested that what happens in a child’s peer group/friendship group can affect their development and functioning in almost every other aspect of their life (Gifford-Smith and Brownell, 2003). Further to this, Rimm (2002) (cited here. This point leads me to think that the allocation of more ch...

What Have I Learnt? This week I will be discussing what I have learnt throughout this module. I thought the best way I could do this was to separate what I’ve learnt through content and what I have learnt through the module. What I have learnt about psychology and education? There are uses for things that I never considered to be important within education. Lectures are not good for engagement. In general lectures are not great for learning. What I have learnt from this module? Groups, leadership and men.
