In the 1960s l became a Voluntary Warden (as we were then called) with the Northumberland National Park and in 1970 transferred to the Durham Countryside Ranger Service which was then being set up and this too was a defining moment as the remainder of my walking companions come from that source. We drove up past the “No Unauthorised Vehicles Beyond This Point” signs to the car park (! Braving the war dogs, special forces, land mines, man traps, armed drones and rude signs (there were none of these by the way), we huddled down behind the corrugated walls where it was almost warm for a short lunchtime.
