Molecular and Quantitative Animal Genetics. ANSC327/ANSC627, 3 credits, Spring 2016. Classical, molecular, and population genetics with specific emphasis on animal systems will be covered. The course will also disseminate molecular approaches for manipulating genetics at the whole animal level (transgenic and cloning). Other model organisms will be discussed to provide a conceptual framework. Graduate students will submit a ten-page research report at the end of the course. About Dr. Hamza.

Our long-term research objectives are to define the cellular and molecular determinants of heme homeostasis in humans. Understanding how heme-iron is utilized will permit the design of novel nutritional strategies to ameliorate iron deficiency anemia in humans and uncover novel therapeutic drug targets against parasites that exacerbate global iron deficiency. Using the worm model, we identified the first eukaryotic heme importer/transporter (HRG-1) which is conserved in zebrafish and humans [ Nature 2008.
