http://beckenhamhistory.co.uk/locations/harvington-estate
The Village High Street. In the early 1870s, five houses were built along what we know today as South Eden Park Rd. At least some of the land, if not all, belonged to William Rudd Mace whose daughter Emily had married George Stanley Lutwyche. The houses most closely associated with them were Elderslie and Oakfield but there were also Chalfont, Homewood and Harvington. How did the whole area become known as the Harvington Estate? The History of Railways in Beckenham
http://beckenhamhistory.co.uk/locations/railways-in-beckenham
The Village High Street. The development of local railways is most interesting, and friction and competition between rival companies was acute. The first railway was the Mid-Kent line opened on 1st January 1857, a junction being made with the North Kent line at Lewisham. Beckenham was a terminus, the turntable being near where the bridge is now; the roof over the line was painted red, white and blue. Soon after this line was opened a coach! Now to return to the Railways. George Hannan, afterwards Station...

Beckenham History - The Parish Church
http://beckenhamhistory.co.uk/locations/theparishchurch
The Village High Street. It is generally supposed that the old Church was built in the reign of Edward III, but it is known that a Church existed on the site before 1100 although no reference is made to a Church there in the Domesday Survey of 1086. The Church Register is among the oldest in the Country, dating back to 1538 when Parish Registers were first ordered to be kept. The second stage was carried out in 1887 when the remainder of the Nave, the North and South Aisles, the Porch and part of the Tow...

The Early History of Beckenham
http://beckenhamhistory.co.uk/beckenhamearlyhistory
The Village High Street. The changes from a Village of scattered hamlets to a Borough, one of the largest in Kent, is both fascinating and interesting. Beckenham has played its part in the Countrys history, and the records in the local Parish Churches reveal the loyalty of the residents throughout the centuries. The long accepted belief that the name of Beckenham was derived from the Saxon words BECC, a stream and ’HAM’, a village or dwelling, has been disproved by recent study of medieval do...Leading a...

The Village High Street. The Village High Street. When we talk of The Village we naturally think of the High Street as the centre of village life, with tradesmen, shops and public houses serving the Manor Houses and Estates and the workers on those estates. Beckenham The Clockhouse
http://beckenhamhistory.co.uk/locations/theclockhouse
The Village High Street. Strangers to Beckenham, arriving at Clock House Station, invariably ask Where is the Clock? The origin of the name appears to have come from a large turret clock which used to be on the stables of a Mansion standing on the site of the present Spa and The Studio. The gardens were well wooded and in the lake there stood a two-tier fountain which, on demolition, was placed in the ornamental water in the Croydon Road Recreation Ground. Robert Borrowman wrote we are told on good autho...

Beckenham - Langley Farm History
http://beckenhamhistory.co.uk/locations/langley-farm
The Village High Street. Was a separate residence. on the Langley estate, about half a mile from the mansion, the entrance being through a tree-lined drive from Wickham Road. Until 1775 the main road passed close to both Langley mansion and Langley Farm, but in that year Amy Burrell diverted the road to keep traffic away from the mansion, forming what is now South Eden Park Road. She built a footbridge across the diverted road to join her Langley estate with the Eden Farm Estate. Sort by Oldest First.
