Black Brook Farm Growers: The Month of October (in brief) So Far

http://blackbrookfarmgrowers.blogspot.com/2011/10/month-of-october-in-brief-so-far.html

Friday, October 14, 2011. The Month of October (in brief) So Far. Brussel sprouts, leeks, carrots and beets. We also have tons of greens that are enjoying to cooler weather: lettuce, pak choy, kale, swiss chard, cabbage, collard greens, arugula, the list goes on. In order to extend our greens season, we bought a Quick Hoop High Tunnel Bender. From Johnny's Selected Seeds website and erected a very rudimentary hoop house. Dave bolting two bent pipes together. We went up to the Common Ground Fair. Your par...

Black Brook Farm Growers: September 2011

http://blackbrookfarmgrowers.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 16, 2011. When Dave and I got the message that a woman in Bedford was looking to sell five of her sheep my first thought was, absolutely not. After all, prudence tells me that we should grow slowly, and so do the majority of organic farming how-to books. But isn't part of the fun getting in over our heads a little? True, there are organic farming how-to books that would agree. The Dirty Life. Can you blame us? Laurel, the most friendly. They love the moveable shelter Dave built them.

Black Brook Farm Growers: August 2011

http://blackbrookfarmgrowers.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, August 30, 2011. Hurricane Irene didn't hit us too hard, but she still managed to do some damage. Toppled Corn - I just staked these up and they were good as new. Blake and Sam banging in some U-posts. An Old-Fashioned Trellis Raising. Waiting for U-Posts (and eating sungold tomatoes). Sunday, August 28, 2011. Chicken Processing Day Meets Hurricane Irene. This morning we got 4 inches of rain, but luckily, the hurricane was tamer than we had feared it would be and, other than a few blown down tom...

Black Brook Farm Growers: Happy New Year!

http://blackbrookfarmgrowers.blogspot.com/2012/01/happy-new-year.html

Saturday, January 14, 2012. We had a great holiday season here at Black Brook Farm. By Thanksgiving the farm was pretty much shut down for the winter, and we were all able to take a break and spend time with our family and friends. We read, worked on projects that had been pushed to the side, watched the movies we'd been wanting to watch, ate a lot of amazing meals and even slept in! Black Brook Farm Growers holiday ham getting ready to be brined. The one thing we did not. Take risks: We want to keep str...

Black Brook Farm Growers: Spring and our new CSA room!

http://blackbrookfarmgrowers.blogspot.com/2012/03/spring.html

Wednesday, March 21, 2012. Spring and our new CSA room! Well, it seems as if Winter is over and it's officially.Summer? At least I got to see one snow storm before it became 80 degrees. Lambs aren't the only babies that we're getting ready for. I just placed an order for 75 freedom ranger. Chicks, which were our favorite broiler chicks from last year, so those should be arriving mid-April. Also, arriving mid-April is our new sow who we're going to pick up from Sugar Mountain Farm. Meanwhile, we've been w...

Wasted Ideology: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Hollywood

http://wastedideology.blogspot.com/2013/06/how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love.html

Friday, June 21, 2013. How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Hollywood. In a piece of abject film “criticism”, Connor Kilpatrick, managing editor of Jacobin, has declared “I Love Man of Steel. And I’m Not Sorry.” The fact that the review starts with a defense of Zizek’s defense of 300,. But this paranoiac anti-Snyder left is only the first straw man Kilpatrick creates—he attacks critics of Man of Steel. In the lefty blogosphere, I’ve seen a few complaints about Man of Steel. 8217;s tie-in campaign with...

Wasted Ideology: November 2013

http://wastedideology.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, November 16, 2013. The Law of Gravity. Is both an incredibly useful, interesting and worthwhile film, and one of the most terrible movies I've seen in a long time. It is, without a doubt, the most beautiful and graceful use of 3D I've ever encountered: It feels like the camera is floating and spinning around in outer space and its long choreographed takes, though none come near as breathtaking as that one shot in Children of Men,. I watched the film with my partner-in-crime Sophie. In fact, mos...

October 06, 2013. Farm Dinner last weekend was all we could have hoped: blessed with perfect weather and an abundant harvest, plus a beautiful pig from our neighbors at Old Field Farm. We fed old friends and people we’d never met, watched the sun set over the Catskills, wallowed in the music of Rachel Brotman and Lora-Faye, drank plenty of Brooklyn Brewery beer. And Finger Lakes wine, and lit up sparklers when the night was up. We were incredibly lucky to have James Abbott. Black Brook Farm Growers.

Wasted Ideology: April 2013

http://wastedideology.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Saturday, April 20, 2013. The day after the bombing, an official candlelight vigil saw 1000 people mourning in Boston Common. After the reports of Dzokhar in a pool of his own blood, seven, eight times that number came to the Common to celebrate. They danced, chanting "BPD" "BPD" "BPD" "USA" "USA" "USA". Don't go outside. Don't open your door for anyone except police.". Do you see them celebrating, do you see them cheering for his capture, do you see them celebrating each kill in Pakistan and Yemen and S...

Wasted Ideology: Relief

http://wastedideology.blogspot.com/2014/05/relief.html

Monday, May 12, 2014. What a relief, the world is over. It is no longer in question. There is nothing to be done. What respite for our consciences. It’s concluded, it’s conclusive, we really biffed it, we did nothing, and we have no one but ourselves to blame. What a relief, to have finally conclusively failed, to be cleared of the possibility of more responsibility, more guilt. We had nothing to win but blame and recrimination, and now we’ve won all of it. Because that “we” is the lie shroud...Not only ...

Wasted Ideology: How to live through the re-emergent despair of the post-movement: Some suggested withouts

http://wastedideology.blogspot.com/2014/04/how-to-live-through-re-emergent-despair.html

Friday, April 18, 2014. How to live through the re-emergent despair of the post-movement: Some suggested withouts. To face the despair without drowning it out in work, in career, in the mistaken impression that years lived for work can be easily shunted aside, maybe so but probably not so much, to not confuse work no matter what work with being alive. To face our despair without being impatient for not being done facing it, wi thout letting. That impatience lead us with dignified resignation to becoming ...

Wasted Ideology: A Brief History of US Statist-Communist Thought: The Last 4 Years

http://wastedideology.blogspot.com/2013/05/a-brief-history-of-us-statist-communist.html

Tuesday, May 28, 2013. A Brief History of US Statist-Communist Thought: The Last 4 Years. 2010: We need a mass movement to respond to the financial crisis and begin a revolutionary sequence. The reason we haven't seen a real movement in America in 40 years is that we don't have a mass Socialist or Communist Party. 2012: The failure of Occupy to move beyond its limited means is a failure of horizontalism: Occupy would have succeeded had it been precipitated by a mass Socialist or Communist Party. Today's ...
