We headed to the cute little lakeside town of San Pedro because of its reputation for offering an insight into traditional Guatemalan life as well as a highly recommended Spanish school. Huacachina is quite literally an oasis in the desert which suffers from a bit of over-tourism but is still a great place to spend a few days amongst the gigantic sand dunes. Once we’d had our fix, we headed to Arequipa which is everything the guidebooks say a cute, quiet colonial town which is a good base to visit the Colca Canyon from, although unfortunately we didn’t make it there thanks to foot and leg injuries…. We spent one night in the town itself in a budget hotel room (not unlike a prison cell) before heading to the coast for 4 nights to stay at a brilliant jungle camping site, Turquesa. We ate fresh fish nearly every day (including awesome ceviche at La Camello. In town), hired bikes to visit the ocean-front Mayan ruins. Morning lighting.
