RB’s Journal for Summer ’07. My trip to China. August 10, 2007. It is Friday morning. I am alive and well in Shenzhen. I have internet access! I have learned to say my first full sentence in Mandarin:. I am not Yao Ming. After checking 100-plus emails, I’m going back to bed. August 4, 2007. Today DM needs to move out of his apartment and YW needs to pack for the rest of our trip. XC and I plan to visit the Shanghai Museum. Then meet up with the others at the Maglev. Our research question: Has globalization and export-led economic development improved labor conditions in China? The Center for International and Intercultural Studies (CIIS) Fellows visited Shanghai, Fuzhou, Wu Yi Shan, Shenzhen, and Chengdu over a three week period in July and August of 2007. There was unanimous consensus among our informants that labor conditions have been improving in China.
