And then [Aragorn] cast the leaves into the bowls of steaming water that were brought to him, and at once all hearts were lightened. For the fragrance that came to each was like a memory of dewy mornings of unshadowed sun in some land of which the fair world in Spring is itself but a fleeting memory'. The Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkien). Well, that says it all really. Just as well as I haven't written much about this yet. In fact I think I'll just quote Tolkien again. And now something by someone else.

At the same time as 'Enter the Dragon' was being filmed there, so when I watch the first scenes now am transported back in time by the music, the type of buses, even the appearance of the grass. 1972: return to Cheltenham. 1976 (year of the hot summer and plague of ladybirds): start at secondary school. 1981 - 1983: sixth form. I don't honestly think I've done much more than began to understand Derrida's ideas and ways of thinking. However, here are some initial observations. The following box including its contents, especially the quotation marks (and including the box (and this introduction? Is possibly a good place to start. Derrida' 'is' 'into' 'thinking' 'without' 'the' 'box' '.'. If it refers to the man himself, it is odd, because he is dead, so the tense is wrong. Is it about thought inspired by his philosophy? In 2003 I found a postcard in a small museum in the town of Cordoba in Southern Spain. This is what I read:. My attempt at an English translation goes as follows:. What is it all about? Well, here are some fragments to whet your appetite. They both hide God and point towards him. And his pharmakon again! I think it's fairly clear from all this that the Sufi strand of Islam is fond of, and constantly plays with, paradox and apparent contradiction. As with Derrida. Even the name 'Sufi' intrigues: typically...

I've set myself a totally unrealistic challenge here: there are so many good films! I'm also suspicious of putting things in order of merit. This is just a selection of films that may give you some insight into the kind of person I am. I hope you find some old friends here, and maybe also discover some new ones. What's Eating Gilbert Grape? Weird and beautiful Japanese animation. Priscilla Queen of the Desert. When I'm feeling down this is the perfect medicine. As good as it gets. What's going on here?

This page is principally my small contribution to a debate which, if you're not a Christian, is unlikely to spark your interest (though it might! Unfortunately, for those of us who are both gay and christian it has been neither academic nor trivial but has cut to the core of who we are and left a lot of casualties along the way. It occurred to me as I was thinking about this page that there is another question begging to be asked: given all the exclusion and the bigotry, why am I still a Christian anyway?

On this page I won't say much, just list some of the books that inspire me, and give a quotation from each one. I've tried hard to choose extracts that give a flavour of each book without, I hope, revealing the plots. Death and the Penguin, Andrey Kurkov (translated by George Bird). The Kite Flyer, Khaled Hosseini. The Life of Pi, Yann Martel. The main body of the book, games appear to being played with story and reality. Derrida. Would love this, I think). I've left this one till last so I'll have to come back to this page to do it justice. In the meantime I'll just try and explain why it's here. This picture is obviously a little rose-tinted. But, as in any decent long term relationship, knowledge of flaws and weaknesses enrich and do not destroy. Since then I have visited other places: Segovia, Salamanca, the Costa Blanca, and (maybe most evocative) the cities of Cordoba and Sevilla in Andalucia. It was in Cordoba that I discovered Sufi Islam. Giles Elli...
